Too bad that link isn't around anymore; it sounds like Tsukasa and Okudera are engaged in Shinkai's headcanon. Which is pretty funny for the creator to have.
>>
There's a scene where Mitsuha wakes up as Taki (for the first time), and she's hanging out with his friends, and she refers to herself using "watashi" which they catch on to.

The question is burning in my mind: how the fuck did they play that joke in the dub? Was it something completely different?

What depression?

Shinkai could of chosen to have Mitsuha die and Taki forget all about her and the events which transpired and for Taki to have a longing trying to find out his source of emptiness which he can never recall.

Right before the marker dropped I was actually smiling at the funny conversation they were having. The marker dropping made my face go stone cold. Honestly the most shocking moment in the film

The marker is definitely the biggest wham moment in the film, but loses its impact when I saw it again. The whole crater meeting is still the best part though.
>>
I saw the film dubbed and they did a god job I thought. How they countered the use of watashi though, when Mitsuha is in Taki's body she always talks a lot softer and stereotypicaly feminine. It felt a little forced to me, but I'm still not sure if I liked it or not. It didn't really detract from the film though, so I guess it's fine.

Wouldn't consider myself a long time fan but I really like Voices and still feel pangs of misery till this day thinking about it.
>>
>>155830832
yeah since 5cm/s around 2007 I guess
his previous films all have a downbeat tempo pace (you can see this in the second half of this film) and characters were little more than self inserts for the audience, kimi no na wa corrected that and i'd say it's pretty much flawless in what it set out to do
>>
>>155830832
I loved his MILF feet anime
>>
>>155830832
Well, this is /a/, not reddit. Of course there are old school Shinkai fans.

Honestly, though, while I really like Kimi no Na Wa, none of his other stuff has been terribly gripping for me. They tend to be either terribly excessive in terms of visuals, suffer from poor characterization, or both. Movies like Garden of Words and 5cm/s just feel like visual overload, and not in a good way. The detail is nice, but terribly indistinct, and his atmospheric lighting means the foreground and background often end up crushed. Compare that to, say, Asano Inio, where his detailed manga backgrounds are contrasted by cartoony character designs.

But Kimi no Na Wa is a perfect storm. It's very much Shinkai's passion project, a story he really cared about getting across, along with several talented animators and artists to rein in his obsession with wallpapers. What you get is something that has more in common with Tokikake than most other Shinkai movies, albeit with a significant Shinkai flair. Plus, the OST is god tier.
>>
>>155830832
I've seen and liked everything he's done, but not all that much.
I was lukewarm to 5cm because I didn't really like the way the plot was built up and payed off. Felt cheap, though it looked pretty. I'm generally not big on bittersweet endings so it left a bad taste in my mouth.
Children who chase lost voices was a hot mess and I can give it credit pretty much only for its visuals, though I liked the mountain scenery early on much more than the fantastical scenery later.
Garden of Words was great through the middle but the big drama explosion near the end really killed it for me. I didn't even dislike the ending, but their confrontation in the apartment was hard to watch and brought the whole package down for me. I still use shots of the park scenes as my wallpaper
>>
>>155830832
I've watched all his stuff but I wasn't really that big of a fan.

Kimi no Na Wa is his best work though.
>>
I haven't seen it yet, but is it hard to follow? I don't know why but whenever a story has multiple timelines and stuff like that I can never manage to follow them satisfactorily and always end up missing something important.

I should have swallowed my autism and actually gone to see it in a theatre, I know I'll probably enjoy it more watching in the comfort of my own home but it's a long wait.
>>
>>155831001
Are other theaters keeping it on until the 21st?
>>
>>155831222
Not really hard to follow. If you're planning on watching it, don't watch the opening song, so you don't get spoiled. The ending gets you even more pumped up if you skip it.

I guess closing your eyes while listening to the OP would do.
>>

The movie really resonates with some people, the sense of longing for something that we don't really know what it is.
>>
>>155832764
And most Miyazaki movies are just retellings too. But the style is decidedly different, for the most part. I won't deny it's a lot more Ghibli-esque than most of his other movies, but I think it has more in common with Earthsea.

>Hosoda's movies are more consistent in quality.
Hosoda's movies tend to fare better in presentation and execution than in concept or style. Shinkai is the other way around, strong themes and style marred by poorly thought out animation direction, erratic pacing, and relentlessly overwhelming visuals. Something like 5cm/s is a great example. I love the colors but for fuck's sake you need contrast. Whenever Hosoda plays with complex motivations and characterization, though, it falls apart. TokiKake was set apart by its stellar animation, all in all the characters were kind of bland and forgettable. Summer Wars works because it's a lot more superficial and a venue to showcase Hosoda's team of Net-kei animators.

Kimi no Na Wa was good because not only was it a movie Shinkai himself was invested in, but he had industry veterans to hold him back, and stop him from going full retard. The animation was a lot more Hosoda-esque, but with interesting characters to express instead.

That said, TokiKake's running scene is still miles better than Kimi no Na Wa's, even if I do love Sparkle.

This, basically.
It's like when you get really pulled into the fictional world of a fantasy or sci-fi story because it's really well-built and compelling and is just a joy to immerse yourself in. Then when the story is over and you realize you'll never again visit that fantastic world, the emptiness sets in.

It's like that with romance, except there's also the vague awareness that this isn't just some magical fictional world, it's real; it's happening all around you all the time and it's a world every decent person can be a part of, but at the same time it's still as distant and unreal of a world to you as any fantasy or sci-fi world because you're not the decent person who can or will find that happiness.
Realizing I get that same sense of cognitive estrangement as you'd get from escapist fantasy just by watching realish people live realish, happy lives in the realish world is some profound kind of upsetting that only compounds the emptiness of knowing my window into that wonderful world ended with the credits.

The stuff about feeling some estoeric longing you can't pin down, having vague memories of things that you're pretty sure were never real and knowing that you once dreamed something incredibly important but can no longer recall really resonated with me as well. It's one of those things that makes you feel like you shed or lost the parts of yourself that were more important to making you who you are as time went on, and now can't even remember them. Like when you try to recall the lyrics to a song from memory and kinda get the tune right but all the words are wrong and the rhythm, just isn't there. The feeling that you're living the song of your life that way and only just imitating a vague feeling of who you remember being.

Fuck, I want to go rewatch it.

There was a group of about 5 asian girls, the other white dude with an asian girlfriend, and then about 30 or so odd brown girls together in various groups. Canada though, so the demographics are pretty different than the states.

They became a thing during the Madoka movies but most of them died out because, unsurprisingly, finding anons who are sociable and not disgusting mouthbreathers seems to be near impossible. The Toronto one seems to be still going because they're either normalfags or really good at pretending.

They're normalfags. Toronto has a lot of ironic weebs of the college anime club variety who use /a/. What's the message behind this movie? How are you going to change your life in order to find true love?
>>
>>155837113
Yeah but the standard response to that vague longing is to seek subtitutes to fill the void. If the longing is one of a person, love or intimacy then seeking what amounts to ultimately less meaningful relationships in search of something that satisfies the sense of longing seems normal. When it feels wrong, instead of thinking "this feels wrong so it must be wrong" they think "this feels wrong so something must be wrong with me, if I keep going and force myself to be normal maybe I'll start to feel more normal and these feelings will go away, or at least if I force myself then I can act normal even if I'm not."
It's easy to begin assuming that the problem is yourself when you've had some kind of uneasy feeling you can't explain plaguing you for so many years. Self-doubt and the inexplicable go hand-in-hand.

Taki hauled ass when he realized it was happening and that it was worth making happen.
They fell in love with each other without even really realizing it. Just by talking, communicating at basic levels and connecting through that, they found something that worked and feelings grew from there.
You can't really 'haul ass' to make that happen. You can't fight for something when you haven't found something worth fighting for. That's part of what made the movie such an appealing fantasy.

That's the point. They had circumstances that lead to friendship then love. Ignoring the magic shinto bullshit, how do you think that works in real life? You start communicating with people. >You start communicating with people.
Most of that communication, even among normalfags, comes from having some convenient shared circumstance that puts them together and gives them a chance to start a conversation. Even a total loser can start talking if they're sharing work or an activity with others. What helps make you a loser is the fact that you stop getting the chances to find those shared circumstances, in no small part because people don't particularly like being around you and find it easier to just quietly make you unwelcome rather than tell you. When people step out of their daily activities, the blinders go down and they close off any receptiveness to salutation or conversation or anything that isn't walking hurriedly to the next stop in their busy life. As the windows into those shared circumstances close, you're left with nothing but quietly tapping at a keyboard in your home alone and walking silently through the crowd of silent walkers while you make your way through your day.

Most of the time people say "Toronto" they're referring to the Greater Toronto Area, since it's easier to just identify the recognizable city nucleus than the 6 or so orbiting valence cities that are literally nothing but suburbs and poorly-maintained highways feeding into the city. It's just easier for people with no real familiarity of the area to understand if you say "Toronto"

There are literally no other films in this day & age that deal with or involve the Hollow Earth concept. I honestly hope Shinkai revisits that "world" in another film one day, maybe adding it to his "Shinkaiverse."

>no emotional ties to anything or anyone in your life and this movie made you realize that.
This feeling has been growing on me for the last few years, I'm closer to 30 than to 20 now and it's started getting me down more often than it used to. But in my normal state of mind, which is still the majority of the time, I know that I am no good with other people and forming close relationships or connecting with people is beyond me for some reason. It's hard to be around people for any length of time and I worry that if, by some strange chance, I did find love one day that I wouldn't be able even then to live with the person and that I'd hurt them. I feel that I would have to change myself from the ground up in order to be able to connect with other people on an intimate level, and I've gone a long way already in proving, through experience, that I am unwilling and incapable of changing. The more pressure put on me, and the more I realised I needed, to change in order to have certain things the more I felt the urge to resist it to preserve myself.

I guess pic related is true; but it's ironic that being the case that I still am capable of feeling loneliness. I just wish I could one day find someone who I could love and who could love me in return as I am, I can handle little compromises but I'll never be the social person that others seem to require you to be.

Yea she knows its because of an anime movie.

In any case she claims that sometimes art acts as a catalyst and brings up emotions and traumas we have trouble dealing with. (Basically the original intention of the whole hur-dur triggered idea)

In my case Kimi no na wa brought to light my regrets and sadness over never finding love and wasting my youth along with my current frustrations at my lot in life.

Basically Kimi no na wa showed me how beautiful life could be and then I came back to my shitty autist single life.

>>
>>155841627
Yeah I felt that too. Being with others always feels like a lot of work to maintain appearances and censor yourself and be someone you're not because that's the person who's socially acceptable and whatnot, and you end up paring down so much of yourself that there's nothing left to enjoy the 'company.' It's like drowning in false-pretense. The constant lying I have to do, especially about my personal life and interests and passions and whatnot, just to make it through a social situation without giving anyone a reason to rabidly denounce my right to oxygen, is suffocating.

Forget love, I'd kill even to just have a friend who I could trust and get along so well with that I could act as naturally to them as Mitsuha and Taki acted around each other. I always lament being alone when I've had too much time in my own head, but after a few hours of emotional hypoxia with good-natured, normal folk, I'm eager to scurry back into my hole and hide from the world again.

Yea, that soulmate shit ain't happenin unless you really delude yourself hard.
Try to find someone you are compatible with. No, that's not someone you just "tolerate", because that's not someone you're compatible clearly since you have to tolerate them.
But first better yourself. Go on a healthy diet, start lifting, do a lot of physical activity etc so that your attractiveness will never be a barrier to finding the person you want (though always work out just to better yourself, not for someone else, otherwise you'll just stop when you find them). From there, do some online dating if you can't find anyone at work (avoid tinder though, 99% are thots).
Don't be afraid to reject people or end things after a few weeks if you're just not that into it. The key to finding someone you can love is finding someone where you really enjoy spending time with them (though make sure it's not an obsession, that becomes unhealthy).

You'll find someone someday if you work for it.

Oh wait, I meant fuck 3DPD nigga just get a waifu

I find you pathetic for even thinking about this in the first place. Who the hell worries about that shit for a fantasy romantic story. You typically think about the best and not the worry about the small things unless you got cucked and it makes you think that way. How are you not able to believe in true love and you dare to even doubt it? Thousands of Japanese woman in Japan are completely pure. There's a reason why Japan's birth rate is declining so much mainly because people are too busy with work which is a huge problem in Japan. Do you assume every 25 year old are not pure?

The two times I went to the theater I was with a big group of friends and there were a decent number of other people in the theater. Don't like to cry in front of other people and some of the emotional impact was gone since I had already seen it. If I was along in a theater the first time I watched it I'm not sure if I would have.

I feel like this movie does a really good job at depicting the attitude of all the young people inside rural villages like Itomori, and kind of tacitly explaining why villages like that are dying. Mitsuha wants to run away from the profession which women have had in her family for generations, because the world is changing and people (i.e. that group of classmates) don't respect miko like they used to.

Tessie's kind of the same case, where he's clearly smarter than what his father has planned out for him, which is being an heir to the construction company. For him, I'm not really seeing dislike of the town itself (since he tried to cheer up Sayaka and Mitsuha when they were complaining), but more of dislike of what it represents, which is being stuck having to run his dad's construction company and not being able to use his intelligence to its full extent. He never explicitly says he wants to leave, but it's pretty clear that he's not really happy with the path he's on in the town.

Sayaka doesn't have as many scenes of her own, so you can't get as good of a sense of her character, so I'm not sure what her reasons for wanting to leave are besides the blanket statements she and Mitsuha complain about.

It was also pretty entertaining seeing the "hip" and "cool" kids who bully Mitsuha and her friends obviously making efforts to seem stylish but still talking in the rural Itomori accent.

Japanese focuses on stroke order more than almost anything else. Sometimes they'll write in indecipherable scribbles that look like nothing, but if you follow the stroke order you realize what kanji it is.

His friends needed a bit of a reminder as well for a second, until they remembered "Oh hey, that town that got obliterated three years ago." So it wasn't just Taki.

Although TBF, by now most Americans today would probably not remember the name of the town United Flight 93 crashed near on 9/11 (Shanksville, PA).

>>
>>155847335
His dad was the head of the construction company, which would normally require an engineering degree. I think he's just the kind of guy who prefers solving problems rather than dealing with business, contracts, and managing people.
>>
>>155847417
It's also probably something that's tragic enough that they don't mention it much in the news. If all 500 people died, and it's a small town like that, it probably gets a TV special or something every year and then gets forgotten for the rest.

The thing I don't get is why there hasn't been some sort of obvious scientific investigation into the area where the meteors fell that would've disrupted the shrine inside the crater on the mountain.
>>
>>155847335
Sayaka had a bit more backstory in the novel; her older sister's actually the one who does the broadcasting for the town. You can hear her at the beginning of the movie, and she's the embarrassed woman standing next to the mayor when they're announcing to stop evacuating. Everyone expects Sayaka to do the same thing as her sister, hence why she's in the broadcasting club
>>
>>155847641
Dang, that fits right in then - it's all about how these jobs get handed down in the family, when the people who are expected to do them want to go and pursue their own interests. Since they can't do it in the town, they instead leave and go to Tokyo.
>>
>>155847335
To be honest, the reason those towns are dying is because they have no industry to keep their economy afloat and subsist on government handouts. The kids are trapped in awkward positions because there are no jobs except the ones their parents already have. They have two options, rigidly follow their parents footsteps and be forever trapped in the town because there's no hope of ever making enough money to move out and no chance for higher education, or move to tokyo as soon as they graduate and hope things work out. It's pretty bleak. Since the townsfolk are so traditional, many don't support their children moving to the city, or simply can't afford it, so it becomes less of a plan for the future and more of an escapist fantasy for a kid who's doomed to squander every ounce of their potential being a slave to the last century in Mt. Bumfuck, of the Nowhere Prefecture.
>>
>>155847623
After the town losing 500 people, going in and disrupting one of the last remnants of that town's history for the sake of understanding a comet that comes by once every 1200 years isn't something that would likely fly. It'd be like spitting in the face of all those people who survived. No Japanese scientist would suggest such a thing.
>>
>>155848005
Is that a cultural thing? It's got to be, since pretty much any decent-sized space rock that hits Earth these days is analyzed, and this one's special since it's a comet instead of a run-of-the-mill asteroid.
>>
>>155848194
Ypu'd have the same conflict anywhere in the world, but in the states the scientists would just do it anyway and the people in the cities would all just collectively laugh at the backwards hicks who want a shred of dignity for their dead neighbours and family and the way of life that was annihilated and now trampled on for the sake of frivolous academic curiosity.
>>
>>155848194
>>155848005
Don't people think comets are what seeded life on Earth? If there was a comet, scientists would be on that shit no matter what. And you can extract the comet, or samples of it, without destroying the remnants of the town.

That might be why the town was fenced off actually. Or we could just say it melted quickly after the impact, since it's mostly frozen hydrogen anyways.

The meteor that fell on the town itself I can see being investigated because there would already be people doing cleanup and all that jazz, everything is already disturbed and everyone is already there.

Going up to the shrine crater and fucking about with that when it was completely untouched, that wouldn't be done.
>>
>>155848333
Yeah, but you'd think if there was any sort of serious study done they'd have discovered the mountain crater and ended up disrupting the shrine.

And if they'd discovered it in the past when they did the study Tessie references, then you'd think that they'd be on pretty high alert that a comet that comes every 1200 years tends to drop fragments on this one particular area of Japan.

The shrine's relatively far away from the point of impact and is depicted as being essentially untouched, so I don't know why they'd bother going all the way out there aside from maybe a few brief foot surveys to see if any debris of interest got tossed that way. If they wanted to study the impact, the crater and most of the important fragments would be near the town itself.

One odd point in the animation that stuck in my head though is the new impact crater is usually depicted as being larger than Lake Itomori and the town is obviously devastated, but when the meteor actually strikes, the majority of the town around the edge of the lake is shown to be more or less untouched by the blast and tsunami, and the crater appears to be much smaller than Lake Itomori.
>>
>>155848484
Don't read this thread because spoilers.
Expect a good movie and sit back to enjoy.
>>
>>155848581
Yeah, but if they knew that Itomori Lake was formed from an impact crater, and then another one just happened, you'd think that they'd pick up the pattern and at least do a short geological survey of the area to find if there were any other impacts in the past, which would then lead them to the mountain crater.

I agree, though, that animation point is kind of weird. We need someone to do a map study of the town and point out all the significant places. I'm not quite autistic enough for that yet, but we'll see in a few days if I can work up the time to do that.

I'm going to pop in here before reading the thread in case this dies before I get done, so I apologize if this has already been addressed.

Why did Mitsuha's father relinquish custody of his kids? Did he really hate having to do shrine stuff that much? What made him go into politics?
>>
>>155849970

Very minor quibble that has big impact: for artstyle for her, her eyelashes are too long. Eyelashes that long changes the focus of her facial features, and makes her look like a different character at first glance.

If you use elements from 1 or 3, Id say reduce eyelash length to half the current size or shorter. But its something to keep in mind in general. When it comes to eyes, a little goes a long way.
>>
Did anyone else get the feeling that if it hadn't been for the comet and Taki, Mitsuha and Tessie would've ended up together? It's pretty clear that Tessie had at least a small crush on Mitsuha, but someone mentioned last thread that Mitsuha thought Sayaka and Tessie should get together. Obviously, Taki coming into the picture and the fact that they were all uprooted by the meteor meant that Mitsuha was taken, but who do you think Tessie would've been with had none of that happened? There are good flags in both directions.

The daughters have a birthright to uphold the miko traditions of the mother's side, whether they like it or not. Mitsuha's dad probably decided that he won't (or really can't) fight against the Mayazumi traditions out of respect for his wife, but he chooses to stay out of it and do some actual good for Itomori instead of just blessings and stuff. The way he is caught up in politics and logic made him grow more strict against his kids, thinking that their mother's blood is driving them mad with the religious irrationals.

He probably understood that while he was never particularly fond of the priesthood, it meant a lot to his wife that the shrine tradition continued. And he also probably understood that he wouldn't have been in a very good position to raise them himself.

But he personally couldn't keep doing it because his heart wasn't in it, so he left to do other things. I would imagine he ended up in politics because that's sort of the one option that's always available once you've left a previous career and want a new one, and he was probably already well-known by the town residents for being the priest of the local shrine, so he had good name recognition.
>>
>tfw couldn't go to the theater to see it
BD when
>>
>>155850401
Well, yeah, but that's because there's no other path for it to go. He had no other girls that he was close to, and Mitsuha would probably have been really distant anytime he brought up a relationship since she was looking for Taki. If that wasn't the case, though, I wonder if he would've ever won her over.
And if it's impossible, who Mitsuha would've been with otherwise.
>>
>>155850627
He probably was like Taki in his past where he was brash and quick-tempered, but meeting Futaba made him a calmer father. Without his wife, he just absolutely says fuck it and goes into politics to do something productive with his life, even if it means ignoring his daughters.

tl;dr: He's the Shinkai Gendo Ikari.

She's probably had a couple boyfriends by now, at least one for sure.
If anything Taki remained a virgin and will learn the truth after he's slept with Mitsuha for the first time. Then their relationship will crumble apart because Mitsuha didn't "save herself" for him and now he wants to date other girls too.
>>
>>155850994
You weren't really watching her body language no matter how much you want to repeat this.

If anything, she was probably her college bullying target. After going cake mode she looks beautiful from afar, but she's distant and probably a space cadet, not to mention a girl from the Japanese boonies going to school in Tokyo, which might as well make her a time traveler from 15 years ago in cultural knowledge.

She probably got invited to a mixer or two in college but never connected with anyone, never joined clubs because it was probably expensive to just move her family from Itomori to Tokyo and send her to college on top of that, and wanders around somewhat lost-looking. Then she just gets ignored for the rest of her college career only getting social contact through sparse random coincidences with meeting her old friends from high school who are now getting married. She's just known as the weird girl who never talks to anybody in her college.
