Fuck off and kill yourself.
>>
I love posting about this film!
>>
Waiting patiently for those BDs, if all this hype is even half warranted it should be good at least.

Also, this
>>155788882
>>
I got to see this in Aus last year twice. The first time, we were late and missed the pre-title montage thing, Where it shows Mitsuha going to the city and her monologue standing under the meteor.

I think the film is better off having NOT seen this. It didn't give away anything that was going to happen, nor give me any kind of,
nor set me up to expect anything. So when it was revealed that the town was destroyed by the meteor, I was genuinely surprised.

Does anyone else feel the same?

Eeh, I didn't think anything of the intro, other than the comet being pretty and the opening song feeling out of place because it was like a TV series OP than a feature film.
>>
>>155789135
on the one hand, I think the opening is a pitch-perfect encapsulation of the mood and aesthetic of the film, but I can see why you'd want certain plot elements or motifs to be totally surprising as well.
>>
>>155789015
I'd try to watch it in theaters. If you can watch it in theaters, you're not doing yourself any favours by skipping it.
>>
>>155789321
It's definitely more "anime" than say a Ghibli project in this respect. Makes it all the more a pleasant surprise that the West has received it so well.
>>
>>155789384
Not playing within 50 miles, probably more. Besides, I'm too autistic to go somewhere like than and purchase a ticket to watch actual animu in the presence of other people. I wouldn't enjoy it. I'll just wait and watch it at my comfy battlestation like everything else for the last decade or so.
>>
I had a few spergs in my showing that were borderline freaking out at the end during the numerous times it seemed as if Taki and Mitsuha would pass each other but not make contact.

Also, everyone gasped when the twilight hour thing ended.

So if Taki switched bodies with Mitsuha, which of them still has his architecture drawing skills?
>>
>>155789135

I went into this movie knowing nothing other than some vague notion about the body swapping. But I was familiar with shinkis other works so the intro kinda set made me thinking it was going to be another youth love that was not ment to be story, (them fading away to each other, reaching towards each other from there distant homes) this made the ending much more satisfying.

Also the first time I was engrossed in the movie I forgot completely about the intro 15 minutes into the movie. The second time you notice it spoils alot. It's like noticing the days/dates are off on their phones, you'd never notice it the first time.
>>
>>155789560
This
>>
>>155789526
yeah audience response was big in mine too
when it cut to Mitsuha (Taki) crying his eyes out whilst groping herself after previously pledging not do so so, it got a nice big laugh

This was my first Shinkai movie, but I've been well aware of the bitter endings of his previous works. There were a number of times a scene would end after a near miss and I fully expecting the credits to roll.
>mfw the real end happened
>>
>>155789816
Yeah, Place Promised (Beyond the Clouds) wasn't his greatest.

For me, I would rate his films

5cm/s>(slightly)Your Name>Place Promised>Lost Voices.

Haven't had a chance to watch Voices of a Distant Star yet, but I've hear good things about it.
>>
>>155789816

I watched promised place years ago when it came out and rembered really liking it. Watched it again after watching your name and felt it was really meh outside of the visuals
>>
>>155789816
none of his other stuff is really in the same league, but they're all pretty short, so you might as well, just to get some sense of his directorial trajectory.
>>
>>155789973

Voices is like 20 minutes long you should just watch it. It's alright, it's a very early work and it shows though
>>
>>155788840

>>155790075
Judged without context purely from a viewer POV, I do agree that Voices is pretty rough -- definitely nowhere as good as this movie.

As an accomplishment, though, I find it really impressive. Shinkai did everything himself (except the music and the girl's voice).
>>
>>155788840
Is there a clean 720p or 1080p rip yet?
>>

he (she) messes up and refers to herself by saying "a girl... gal... guy like me" or something, I can't quite recall
>>
So how much of the film (Or Makoto's work in general) is done with computers?

I'm assuming that the vast majority of characters, locations and actions are hand-drawn; but is anything done with computers? Obviously touch ups and cleaning, but would they use it for lighting?
>>
>>155790399

>>
>>155790399
Was the dub acting decent? My sister wants to see it but doesn't have a day off until Saturday when only the dub is left playing. I'll skip seeing it again if it doesn't have the feel of the Japanese.
>>
>>155790526
Yeah, it felt clunky but it's such a specific joke that can't translate. Gotta say, though, the dub was actually pretty decent overall. I'd almost recommend viewing it since it allows you to take in all of Shinkai's art in it's fullest.
>>
>>155790622
The dub was the only version playing in my area and I didn't have a problem with it. I hear the acting in the sub is something special though.
>>
>>155790622
The dub was pretty good as far as dubs are considered. Unfortunately, I think the biggest negative impact of the dub is that the Radwimps songs were also redone in English. And while I applaud the effort they put into writing and singing it in English, some of the lyrics just sound a bit off. Something about the timing and certain word choices just didn't sit well with me.
>>
Is it worth it to cosplay Taki to the last viewing I can go to? I threw it together after Friday and it's pretty basic, so I might look like an autist. On the other hand, I'll probably never see anyone in that theater again.
>>
This was the first anime movie I've seen without the formal speech patterns that were so common in Miyazaki. It kinda felt less Japanese.
>>
>>155790699
Yeah I saw English dub and Japanese OST last year and having listened to a few of the songs redone in English, I prefer the originals. The lyrics aren't exactly super important anyway.
>>

I'm going to throw aside my /a/-approved cynicism and embrace my old teenage hyperbolic enthusiasm for a moment

This movie is a god-damned masterpiece. This is one of the greatest films I've ever seen in my entire goddamn life, and someday like ten years from now I'm going to have to rent out a theater to see it again the right way, not that will stop me from buying the BD.

This movie made me feel things, man. It swept me away into an emotional and beautiful world that made me forget about my shit life and invest myself wholly in the lives of it's characters.

Fuck any and all haters, I will fight you in the parking lot.
>>
>>155795199
I think another director could've been much more cynical and poisoned by irony in tackling those kind of issues, but both guys seem totally all in on the honesty of the emotions, might be a Japanese thing. It's nice, either way.

I saw it on opening day at Cineplex Forum on St-Catherine, arrived about an hour early thinking it was gonna be as bad as Madoka was. It wasn't -- we were first in line for a good 15 minutes. I lived in a town of 20k growing up, then later moved to a town of (I shit you not) ~200

Small town life is shit if you're in an American Midwest factory town that smells like literal pigshit from border to border when the wind blows wrong.

But living in the mountains, in a town that has culture and a real sense of community? And is still only a day trip away from one of the most happenin' cities in the entire world? It's a fucking dream.

Hell, even the 20k town had an annual festival celebrating the founding of the town that really did have a sense of community and tradition to it.

Instead now I live in what can barely be called a city at 250k and everything is as bland as fuck. I would move to the mountains in a heartbeat if I thought I could pull it off without becoming destitute.

What do people like about this film? I seriously don't get it.

It looks nice, but so do most other Shinkai films. Meanwhile the art direction is all over the place. Me and some buddies even made fun of the pointless rotation shots. The songs are garbage. The mains have no actual character traits. The story is just Shinkai making shit up on the fly.

How is this considered one of the best anime ever made? I rather consider it the worst feature-length anime I've ever watched.

>What? Like the ones trying the capture the comet in the sky?
It's an extremely overused kind of shot in the movie, not just in the scene at the beginning. There is the vid I attached around 35 minutes in. There are more rotations around 59, 62 and 82 minutes (ignoring those with any celestial objects) and probably several more that I missed since I just skipped through the file. These kinds of shots are normally rare in anime since they can only be done with CGI or by drawing a large number of frames, which cuts into your budget. But here they are so abundant it gets really noticeable, to the point of ridicule.

>Ok contrarian-kun, name a better anime movie.
Literally any Ghibli movie including Tales from Earthsea, if you want an easy answer. And since this movie is pretty much Shinkai trying to ape Hosoda, I'll also mention The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, which shares the motive of using time travel to correct errors of the past. I can also mention stuff like Honneamise, the Patlabor movies, Ghost in the Shell or Angel's Egg, but those are less directly comparable.

If you asked me for something I consider about on equal footing, that would be Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time.

It's not the the shots are bad. They just are extremely overused. It's like Shinkai got his new toy (better CGI/bigger budget) and has to play with it all the time, even when it doesn't make sense from a directorial point of view.

please explain what exactly makes using the same rotational shot in succession a bad thing, seems to me you only say it's bad because they used it 3 times so now you can't stop thinking about how they used a rotational cut when literally anyone else doesn't give two shits about that.

you know what other people thinks when they see this shit? They probably just focus more about what's actually being presented and think about the environment's vastness since that's generally what a rotational shot sometimes fucking does.

I think that everyone's looking at it the wrong way. There's nothing wrong with overusing shots, but there's also an issue where repeating the same type of shot can sometimes lead to loss of focus and pointless artistry. The question isn't whether repetition is good or bad - it can be both, but whether repetition in Kimi no na wa was well executed or not.

One of my favorite repeated shots in the movie was the sliding door close-ups. It has an Ozu-esque tinge to it, it helps create a rhythm to the otherwise chaotic narrative, that comforting sound acting as a leitmotif, but more than that, it's a clever form of storytelling. See, the reason you really only see those sliding door cutaways in Mitsuha's town is because sliding doors they don't really exist in the big city. It's a traditionalist relic, but one with a very distinctive look and sound. But there's a parallel drawn between the sliding doors in Mitsuha's rural town, and the sliding train doors in Tokyo, which also have this distinctive look and sound.

It's a clever visual quirk that really ties the movie together.

As for rotational pans, yeah I can see where he's coming from, sometimes that sort of shot can get a little tiresome. But I really only recall it being used four times in the movie, and all at pivotal moments. Ever since Shinkai was directing porn he's had this thing for wide shots that show off his gorgeous landscapes, so I'll give this one a pass, since it isn't as overbearing as some of his other movies. It's a little grandiose, and perhaps a bit gaudy, but I think that's what he was going for here, and it's not as if the movie is inundated with them.

The use of technology for technology's sake is not a bad thing. Tron and Toy Story were significant exactly for its groundbreaking use of technology. Frankly, I felt those establishing shots were breathtaking, and something never before possible in traditional animation.

That Shinkai has incorporated digital technology so masterfully into traditional animation is exactly what makes him superior to his contemporaries. Miyazaki especially has never managed to progress, and now it feels each film, while still beautiful, feels like an old master refusing to change.

And to compare it to Girl Who Lept Through Time like that shows you didn't understand the film at all. That time travelling to change the past is but a trivial element of the film.

The awful destructive power of natural disasters, the gap between Tokyo and rural Japan, the beliefs and traditions of Shinto mythology, the roles of girls and boys in society, the means by which far away people can be close and people close together can be distant, these were all far more significant themes explored in the film.

There is nothing I loved more than the melancholic train scene in Spirited Away. And to this day I recall that sadness on the long distance bus between college and my hometown, knowing that in a few months I'll lose my priveledged status as a student. I'll have all the hopes of many people on my shoulders, my aging parents, my coworkers, my future family. But art, technology, and society are intimately linked, and as the other two move on, so too does art.

Actually, while >>155800249 is correct in that she couldn't have been writing 好き, she could have been trying to write it in hiragana (すき), which is what Taki himself wrote, so consider that theory un-debunked.

She was probably writing her name in kanji; if she was planning to write すきorスキ she probably would have made some sort of comment like, "You thought of the same thing too, huh." instead of saying "I can't remember your name like this." hinting at surprise

Also, I just noticed from rewatching the scene just now that Mitsuha starts her stroke right in the center of Taki's palm, which gives her very little space to actually write anything at all besides a single character. Think it is probably just a mistake from animators and she intended to write her full name though it woulda been incredibly squished, but does anyone have any other theories?

Nice, just got back from watching the dub. It was pretty good as dubs go, but it fell flat for me on two counts.

Their translation for "kataware-doki" was pretty infuriating, and the best example of "forced translation" I've heard in recent history. It was stilted when it was introduced, and luckily it was only mentioned twice more in the movie, but it didn't really work. Unfortunately, I don't think there was anything else they really could've done to translate that.

Yotsuha saying "boobies" to match the syllable count of "oppai" was annoying, though, and they definitely could've fixed that by changing the sentence up a bit. Nobody fucking says boobies in real life, ever. Even little kids.

Good points:
>>155794548 is pretty much great, though I think the first one should be ranked at least a bit higher. Luckily, Zenzenzense is pretty much completely overshadowed by dialogue, so it doesn't really matter. Hearing the other songs in English was pretty valuable since Funi hardly translated them, and RADWIMPS did a great job taking them from Japanese to English.

Hearing the movie in English really helped me get a feeling for some of the scene's atmospheres better. I really noticed this in the scene at the festival, where Tessie and Mitsuha (Taki) are trying to get people to evacuate. I got a better sense of their desperation and the fact that they were being completely ignored.

Still wouldn't recommend it for a first watching, but it does have some merits to it, which was surprising.

Tron was an awful piece of garbage whose effects might have looked mindblowing back in the day. Toy Story was the first feature that managed to use CGI for everything without looking like total shit, and was actually a good movie for the whole family in its own right. Kimi no Na wa is just an above-average-looking anime movie with a retarded story. It's not even a Tron, much less Toy Story.

>That time travelling to change the past is but a trivial element of the film.
It's the last half hour before the epilogue. Sure, you can say it's not what the movie is *about*. Neither is it what Tokikake is actually about, but it's far from a trivial element in either. It's the vehicle that drives the plot.

>The awful destructive power of natural disasters
Not really explored. When Taki finds out about it, it's just a number. When it happens again, it's just 30 seconds and a crater.

>the gap between Tokyo and rural Japan
You're overselling this as well. Little more is shown about Mitsuha's life in Itomori than her school days and shrine activities, which she mostly find boring.

>the beliefs and traditions of Shinto mythology
That kuchikamizake contains part of your soul or something? The red string of fate? Is that even Shinto stuff? Again, it feels like you are overselling what is actually a minor aspect of the film.

Actually, I was somewhat curious. Is there any reason Mitsuha might have to suspect Taki forgot her/there's some cross-time shenanigans at this point in the timeline?

Considering her monologue before where she was just wondering whether Taki would be bothered or glad to see her, it seems like she doesn't have an inkling at what's going on with the cross-time interactions they had. But, she did ask "Do you remember me?"... was that just a roundabout expression of saying hi? After all, who can possibly forget bodyswapping with a girl for a couple/several weeks in his lifetime, much less probably just a month before at most. (It isn't clearly stated in the movie afaik, but she probably didn't wait that long after their body-swapping abruptly ended to try to find him.) However, on the other hand, she's convinced that it's Taki yet just accepts that she doesn't remember her? Even when they body-swapped just a monthish ago? It'd make more sense for her to think he's trolling her. It's not that she interprets it as her having mistaken a lookalike for the real Taki either considering she explicitly said, "Even though he's Taki-kun."

There seem to be behaviors pointing in both directions...

Lastly, how did she not realize that Taki's face was a bit too young from the one she knew (or did she)? Faces mature a lot from 14 to 17.

Any theories?
>>
>>155806533
Nah, "breasts" is basically one syllable, but the only time the word "oppai" appears alone is when Mitsuha exclaims it after Yotsuha says "Glad to see you're not touching your oppai again today", and to make that one two syllables all you have to do is make the line "My breasts?" instead of "Boobies?"

In all other cases, the words in the line Yotsuha's saying can be rejiggered to add in an extra syllable somewhere. I was even doing it in my head in the theater, though I've forgotten exactly what the lines were and what I would've changed them to by now.

I actually read a really sad manga "kimi to hyakkaime no koi," which incidentally also has a movie but only airing in japan he day before I saw Kimi no Na wa. The reason I saw it the day after was because I knew it had a happy ending and I desperately needed healing. Originally was planning to go on the weekends with friends but decided I needed healing and couldn't wait. Shinkai delivered.

At least the second time you feel comfort regarding the plot so you can really focus on the art and direction.

Yes, It probably hit me harder than anything else in my life actually, the first time I watched it on the 720 rip back in february, I didn't feel much at first, but the next day it hit me like a ton of bricks: I lost my appetite for about a week, would feel physically ill if I ate anything that had a strong taste, didn't feel like talking to anyone, stopped playing video games, or going out with friends. In the end it made me take steps to change my life for the better so I'm very glad to have seen this film. Rewatching it in theaters now is really magical for me, I cried a long time after I left the theaters.

I also wasn't that impressed although I did enjoy it when I first saw it in the theaters this week, but I found a lot more appreciation for it after I came back and revisited 90% of the movie from the webrip, pausing through all the scenes to notice the details and discussing it here with anons. My main problem, that I still think is the biggest weakness of the movie, is that the exposition was too short and they entered the main plot too quickly. To a firsttime viewer the love between the two seems to grow too quickly. Most of their body-swapping hijinks was fastforwarded in a montage. If Taki and Mitsuha got 5-10 minutes more interaction whether it be face to face or through the phone (via say tasogare magic), it would have felt more natural. But, if you accept that they fell in love as quickly as they did, it's a great story.

As a followup, Taki is pretty much confirmed to be in the second year of school, and either in Class 2-B or 2-C based on this frame. I'm inclined to thing 2-B, since he's at the door near the back of the room, and there's probably another door at the front that has the placard 2-B in front of it.

For such a tiny country where you can travel so fast and efficient from one place to another, the differences between often very nearby regions or cities can be ridiculously exaggerated.

Like imagine squeezing contiguous US to the size of California but preserving the diversity of all regions, states and all, that's pretty much how it is in Japan.

Because of the visuals, and the fact everyone will praise and schill to the Moon. I am not saying it's a terrible movie. I did like the visuals but the story felt lacking to me.

Maybe it's because I have watched a lot of movies over the years from Hollywood and anime that I have seen it done to death. Just my opinion really.

I wonder what it's like to be uprooted from your village and moved to the city like that. There's a certain clean, ordered lifelessness in the shots of Taki and her studying, totally different from the verdant vigor of Itomori. My field in college was competitive, but it's still nothing compared to the entrance exams for Toudai or PKU. While being confined to a small town can be frustrating for the ambitious, the pace of the city can also be exhausting for those looking for a more peaceful life taking over the family inn.

Dude, the body switch shit was barely the setup. It goes way beyond that.
>>
>>155812906
Sure, but those are almost always for comedy, and generally not with strangers. Regardless, though, just because it employs that one trope doesn't mean its trite. As a romance movie, this is a pretty refreshing one, at least that I know of.

And of course, romance movies are all about pathos and catharsis. Sure that's subjective, but it seems most people who watch it do get invested and feel emotion from it.

Well, one of the greatest films of all time, Casablanca, goes on for 100 minutes and also has them go their separate ways. Gone with the Wind is 220 minutes and they also split up. Those are different, of course, because they actually meet up. But 5 cm is all about the absence of love.

The conclusion was that Takaki could finally move on from the relationship he'd built up in his head, knowing that Akari was alright and had moved on herself.

>>
>>155814015
Yeah, go back and rewatch it, Takaki is smiling as he walks away. Takaki's big problem is that he's afraid Akari has been waiting for him all these years, and that he needs to get to her, or else she'll wait forever. Which is exactly what she did in the first part of the movie. Remember how he hoped Akari wasn't waiting for him at the station? The irony is that Akari had moved on, and it was Takaki who'd spent his life stuck waiting.

The ending is classic bittersweet; sad in that they don't get together, but happy in that both of them are content with it and have moved on. Check out the manga, it gets into more detail and adds scenes.

That girl had as much character as styrofoam. I can;t fathom why anybody likes her. She was a walking plot device to be the 'older prettier girl that fails to win the love interest's heart' that's obligatory for most shoujo romance. She even had the bland face and ugly fishlips to make her seem more 'mature' while also making her look ugly so as not to make female viewers feel insecure.
She exists to confirm to the audience that the male love interest had romantic value and sex appeal beyond the protagonist's perspective, which is something that always matters in shoujo romance.

You know, I always thought crying at anime was dumb as shit. I've seen over 1200 mongolian zootropes at this point, and everything /a/ considers "sad," and all the goddamn "tearjerker" sad shit always seems retarded to me.

When I first watched Kimi no na wa, I didn't cry. Just thought it was a terrific movie, but my chest did ache from the emotional third act.

On the second watch, about the same.

Today I watched it for the third time, paid attention to a lot of the foreshadowing stuff, and I didn't end up weeping but my eyes were definitely watery on the drive home.

This shit hits like an emotional truck and I will fight anyone that denies it. This isn't just dumb fanboying, I haven't felt this cathexic since LoGH. It's not terribly sad, but it just throws you for a loop and ties your emotions in a knot.

Generally speaking, crying isn't limited to sad things. It's easy to get divested from a narrative that is obviously trying to make you sad. Lots of people reject sadness compulsively, so even if something is genuinely sad and good at making you feel sad, you'll probably be tempted to dismiss it, even as far as rationalizing some in-the-moment justification like "it's contrived" or whatnot to excuse yourself from being invested and deny that sad feeling. It's pretty rare to cry from something sad you watch unless you're already connecting it to a sad thing you've experienced. I cry like a child to certain things now that I would never have cared about as a teenager because I've experienced more of life and can relate to that sadness on a better level, and I sure as hell don't like it.

But for a movie like this, the tears are more like tears of happiness, or of a build-up of tension or anxiety that finds sudden release. It's the cathartic payoff of seeing something you've become invested in come to a spectacular head and create a moment where it feels okay to have that emotional release. This movie was very good at both making the viewer invested, and delivering those great moments where one could shamelessly participate in a wonderful cry.
