It's useful to know what a work got out of being animated that it wouldn't have in a different medium.

Because only 2D lets them add visual gimmicks like that lavishly animated shot of her hair coiling around him (because he feels compelled by her, in case you didn't get it).

There's literally no other need for any reason than that. A lot of people's motivations and dreams comes from "I want to do X", and that's basically what you build your life upon. Why would adapting a novel be any different.
