The manga is very good and worth reading for the missed stories, but yeah the anime is much better.

I liked the movies but the tv series is a little bit too low production quality for me, atleast at the beginning. But 3 great movies out of this series and another one "worth watching to make up your own mind"

Don't skip the anime, you'd be missing too much. It has a god tier cast of VAs, great soundtrack, amazing OPs/EDs and some high quality visual direction.

How's the anime vs manga on Maison Ikkoku? I just started the manga, but only one chapter in. Not too late to watch the anime first.

I hear a lot of people say the manga is better, but as someone who's watched the anime, there's a lot you'd be missing.

Like Urusei Yatsura (which shares most of the same production team) the visual direction is amazing, and nails the 80s setting and atmosphere perfectly. The VA cast is top notch, the soundtrack is fantastic and overall, it's a great viewing experience.

The biggest problem is, and always will be the tenants of the house that aren't the MC or Kyoko. Just a horrible, nauseating group of characters.

I read UY raw and it's beautiful. The scans may be terrible and the translation bad, since it's hard to catch the amount of puns in English.

I personally hate the tv show, but I watched it with 80mb files per episode and thought it was too rough (I love classics like Harlock and Ashita no Joe so age isn't an issue). I didn't get past episode 40 though.
