Both are debunked as inaccurate. Rei is able to separate herself from piloting Evangelion and her inner thoughts don't relate to it either. Rei is all about the "I am me" line of thought, not the "I am x who wants to do x".

Sure, hence the development of Rei. These are complex feelings, and even if Gendo is using Rei, even he has a soft spot for Rei, something Fuyutsuki points out in the series. The same goes for Rei, she looks to Gendo as a father but at the same time, acknowledges that he is also the one keeping her down. Rei's development is about ackowledging these things.

They raised her well and gave her a normal upbringing, and they even talk on the phone. That's far more than Shinji ever got, not to mention Rei who was raised in a lab and strangled.

Rei is the God of Mankind. She is it's progenitor, put in human form to suffer as a human, and eventually claims her original goddess form back in the end. From a human perspective, Rei is the everlasting divine while Asuka is the frail human.

Rei suffers, gets hurt, but she has that spark of eternity in her which makes her defy even death.
When Asuka suffers, she breaks. She has no proper individuality because her life is a lie she cannot escape.

There is a big difference between the two. Rei prevails and develops positively, while Asuka fails and regresses into a comatose state of decay.

In this way, Rei is canonically better than Asuka. You can also claim that Rei is more virtuous than Asuka.

It does make him a better swimmer, and that's all it takes for opponents to hate him. Perhaps a poor example, but it gets the point across. Rei sees more success than Asuka in NGE, and is even someone who can be revived from death, and she's also Lilith, a goddess. Where Asuka buckles, Rei still stands strong, and so on.

Rei sacrifices herself and gives of herself to help others even if they don't deserve it.
Asuka attacks others and blames everyone else when she fails, and she even kills others with her attitude. There's just many many of these papercuts and wounds that make Asuka fans butthurt.

However on the flip side you could also say that the fact Asuka managed to persevere and hold her own while just being a mere human makes her that much more impressive.
It's been a little while so don't hold me to this, but doesn't Rei get injured and 'die' way more in the battles than Asuka does, and doesn't she defeat less angels?
In the end that doesn't really matter though since power and success aren't everything, and really "all around better" is a subjective measurement. All I know is that if I had to hang out with one I know who I'd choose, because Asuka is more fun and more interesting, in my eyes at least.

Well that's the thing, we can't say that she does. She doesn't persevere, but rather she is carried by everyone else, notably by Rei and Misato. Rei saves her from Arael, Armisael and then later resurrects her soul in End of Evangelion. Misato shelters Asuka and takes care of her, and makes sure she is carried and clothed and then put in EVA02.

Also you remember wrong, sort of. Rei takes more battle damage, but mostly because she puts herself in the line of fire to protect the rest. It's an ongoing theme for the character, the protector that shields the rest. This means Rei incurs damage, but Rei never goes comatose does she?

Even if an Asuka fans trick him/herself into thinking that "no one is all round better", the facts are that it's a still a lie. The Asuka fan will still be bitter about Rei's canonical superiority. This leads to doujins like Re-Take, like some other anons are discussing.

In this doujin, Asuka obviously gets the Shinji while Rei hangs herself, and instead of Rei being the "observing god figure" like in episode 1, Asuka is now watching Shinji instead. Rei's original character was in a word, awesome, something End of Evangelion is testament to. Great imagery, bandages, lances, eyepatches, Rei had it all.

Look at this picture. Rei's superiority cuts so deep into the Asukafag psyche that these wars will never end. They saw Rei in all her glory, but got hard for Asuka, and thus began to hate out of envy. Now in Rebuild Asuka is half-angel like Rei and even has a -nami name.
