I recently watched the first episode again for the first time in a while, and I have to say it's pretty difficult to not be deeply moved by it now.

To me, ep1 is just mediocre. It doesn't seem like it was going to be anything special. In hindsight, we didn't have ep11/12 when ep1 aired. The callback to ep1 was really good.

3eps rule application is really made for something like this. Ep2 got better and ep3 was really good so it is a quite shame if people just dropped and dismissed after the few opening minutes.

I actually don't mind her as a character. It was just that the show glossed over the fact that most chameleons, including panther chameleons, really change color due to mood/excitement rather than for camouflage. For the most part, the show seems to care a bit about accurately portraying Friends' animal characteristics, so this just irked me a bit.

I get they were working with designs previously made for the game, but the portrayal is pretty stereotypical. I just think a chameleon that changes colors based on its emotions offers more potential for interesting story/character interactions.

Gentoo. The Penguins are in itself fine. But Gen i can't stand. It reminds me of Haruna of KC. A bland, uninteresting, boring girl yet everybody likes it for no reason other than she's cute.

I like penguins idols they're song good and they were cute.

You do notice though how all those people who claimed to be complaining that the technology and abilities the penguins had were out of place never came along to criticise the show for things like the foxes maintaining complex machinery or Wolf being a manga artist.

I think I appreciate the first episode more now that i've seen the full journey. Also knowing more about servals really did help.

I think some of it is just the fact that there's a few moments in it that are kinda draw the attention away from the story and other things that only are given greater significance later. I think the first cerulean encounter and the fact that there are two different cerulean encounters in the episode made it seem like it'd be a monster of the week show but with kinda shitty cg monsters. Glad it ended up being about cute friends over coming challenges together cutely.

And also hippo is kind of a jerk and has a design that isn't as distinctive of their animal archetype. I mean milf in a wetsuit is a great design personally, but its not as cute as other friends.

But really watching it again and really knowing about serval and kaban it makes the episode so much better.

There's a lot of great moments in the episode though and it sets up the foundation for all the great moments that are yet to come.

Like this scene where you see Serval holding several paper airplanes in her arms. She was so enthusiastic and amazed by something that is so simplistic that there's a child-like charm that radiates from this simple gesture. Just imagining her energetically requesting not just one, but several of these airplanes from Kaban offscreen puts a smile on my face. The way she preciously cradles them is indicative of their newly formed friendship which was a beautiful thing both in this episode and for all the subsequent ones as well.

Or how about in the scene right after that where Serval bids Kaban goodbye and requests her to call her Serval-chan the next time they meet. Watching Kaban hesitantly look back several times before reluctantly treading off into the unknown contrasts against the heartwarming scene following the cerulean fight. But all of this gloom is immediately dispersed when you see that Serval decided to follow Kaban anyways, albeit in the awkward manner of sneaking behind her.

The entire episode despite seeming dull and uneventful at a first glance is filled with these tugs and pulls your feelings one way and another which is anything but dull. I could go on and on about this but basically the first episode was very very lovely.

Personally, I liked the first episode quite a while before episodes 11 and 12 aired.
Honestly, I didn't hate it all that much the first time I watched it. But around ep 5 it was already quite endearing to me.

Literally what happened to me.
Dropped it because of the godawful CG animation then decided to see why it's so popular, watch it all at the end of the season and ended up loving it.
Truly the surprise of the season and probably the year.

My understanding (from light skimming of Wikipedia) is that rather than mood, it has a lot to do with signalling to other chameleons. Mating displays, assertion of dominance, etc. So it does make sense that, with no other chameleons around, its primary purpose would be camouflage.

And she does change color based on mood in the 'fight' with Kaban. Though that might not really count.

yeah but that was something i missed on my first watch of it. That especially became more pertinent later on.

I will admit that I was caught off guard by the CG and some moments drew my focus from the story in my first watching and so it distracted me from fully appreciating the story. And some of it made more sense in retrospect when i gave the episode a fairer shake and fully being engrossed in the episode.

Actually, over 95% of shows I dismiss within the first 5 minutes of watching an episode usually really are just shitty shows.

It's really rare for me to revisit a show and to think to myself: "I made a mistake."

I instantly dropped KemoFure on episode 1 during the chase scene through the gas because of how bad the cg looked, I didn't pick it back up until I saw that people were actually still watching and enjoying the show.

I guess. But the story is very simple so it's hard to miss out on all these points unless you're not paying attention to the episode. That being said Episode 1 if not my favorite is one of my favorite episodes of the show.
