Where the FUCK do people who live in the middle of nowhere in Japan's countryside even work? Do they all just have ricefields and grow their own food?

The scenery in the movie was gorgeous and it makes me want to live there but where would you work?

If I wanted to buy a cheap plot of land in the countryside and live peacefully for the rest of my life how much money would I need to save up? I thought they were practically giving land away to foreigners since the rural populations are so low.

>>155677442
This is NOT true. Who would she have lost her virginity to?

Surely Mitsuha stayed in Itomori through high school, and that's a town of like 10 people, so it's only college we have to worry about. But she was pretty reserved throughout the movie, and coming from the boonies, she wouldn't suddenly turn into a college slut. It was probably overwhelming enough to experience life in the city for a few years.

Then she worked for a couple years, but anyone who's over 22 knows there's not much room for romance in the working world. And with Japan's strict corporate structure, dating coworkers is probably even more frowned upon.

Not to mention we see that she's struggling with a sense of emptiness and meaninglessness, which implies she's been simply drifting through life. If she went through a serious relationship, her problems would be different.

Ergo, my wife is NOT used goods.
>>
>>155679709

Although you don't get anything from her perspective in the epilogue of the novel I have the impression from the final part of her story that she would have had the same feelings as Taki, waiting for something.
Perhaps it was different in that she had a feeling she had to go to Tokyo but considering she had the same reaction as Taki when they saw each other on the train it's pretty likely that she wasn't involved in any romantic relationships since saving the town.
>>
>>155681092
It was pretty great in the novel. That whole search part was really enthralling.

I've wondered such things too, but its obvious they aren't all hick farmers who grow what they eat. They definitely have some jobs. Mechanics, bartenders (as shown by the 2 bars in town) obviously some farmers, convenience stores, probably a few smaller doctors offices around, teachers, etc. As for how much it'd actually cost you, I'd like to know as well.
>>
>>155682058
Why would you even subject yourself to a dub.

I just saw this in theaters subbed. I liked it. I can't even imagine how this movie would be dubbed with all the songs. Did they put in contemporary english hot 100 songs in?

I still think 5cm per second is better though
>>
>>155676551

Same thing for towns in the middle of nowhere in the States - you have farmers (or miners/lumberjacks), people in local government, people working in services (healthcare, food, and utilities), and maybe one big private manufacturer and when that goes the town is suddenly in decline.
>>
>>155682169
that combined with the screeching *DING* when it cuts away before the meteor hits in flashbacks
>>
>>155682166
I haven't seen the movie so I cannot give comparisons in that regard.
It is slightly more detailed than your average LN, still not as detailed as your average western novel. You probably get a better grasp on Taki's character and emotions during the search phase because there is a lot of exposition that probably wasn't in the movie.
I found it a really enjoyable read. I need to see the movie though, in six months when it comes out on DVD/BD. I wonder when it comes out for rental.

A lot of them will commute half an hour or so into a city for work. If the town has any real size then that would be common, especially if there is a city nearby.

Small towns really in the middle of nowhere are probably dying.

Mitsuha is a self-respecting girl from the countryside. She wouldn't be tempted by a normalfag who blatantly wants sex. Note that Taki's dick was seemingly the first she touched, and that was well into high school.

>>155680444
It's okay, I accept that only Taki can make her happy in her universe. I have one too many dimensions to reach her.

>>155679941
Maybe it's not 100% culturally frowned upon, but basically what >>155681783 said
>>
>>155682154
The main problem is that the English gets broken up in an unnatural way in order to fit the pacing of the music.
>>
Was anyone else unable to not compare 5cm while watching this? There are very similar cut scenes and angles. I'm sure he's just paying homage but it's quite a lot. Almost makes you think it's the same world.

Taki/ Takaki
Clouds/Sky Flares
TRAINS
Girl standing in shadowed grass looking up at the sky

No, I'm pretty sure it's an English vocalist dubbing over the instrumental of the original songs with translated lyrics. The vocalist is kinda lame and really forces the syllable count, but it's not bad enough to ruin the movie or anything.
>>
>>155683334

The impression I got was that even though they didn't remember what happened, the emotional impact of it sort of screwed up the trajectory of their lives. Taki couldn't let her go (his entire career path is basically him subconciously trying to keep the dream alive based on his memories of that place) and she seems to have an equally strong reaction to seeing him too.

I doubt either of them have had a serious relationship in the meantime. Even if they tried, it would have felt hollow for reasons they couldn't explain.

>>
>>155685575
The same reason why Taki changed the past because Mitsuha died in the past but now that he changed the past, he had no reason to change the past in the first place since Mitsuha now didn't die from the comet.

It's fuckin magic.
>>
>>155685738
What are ''timelines''
>>
>>155685575

you can't see dates in dream-o-vision
>>
>>155685575
The actual best explanation for this is that even if either of them noticed the 3-year difference in dates, they wouldn't remember them after they woke up. Remember, the only things they really kept were the notes/reports they left eachother.
>>
So what's the timeline like in the end? Was there still the body swapping in the new timeline (besides the last swap)?
>>
>>155681440
That scene gave me chills, but I thought it was a bit of a premature spoiler. I think Shinkai meant for the audience to only figure out that Itomori was discovered by a comet when Taki discovered it, but as soon as that scene ended I thought, "Oh shit, was she just killed by that fucking comet?" It ruined the impact of taki discovering the crater imo.
>>
>>155686137

>>
>>155686067
not hatin but taki drew this from memory
>>
>>155686317
Yeah, I worded that wrong. I don't mean they forgot EVERYTHING, of course- major sights and key locations and such would definitely stick in memory. I'm talking about how it's mostly just fuzzy recollection of whatever happened, so details like the date would probably be gone.

Because he knew that the name wouldn't be remembered anyway. He read Mitsuha's name in the book of the dead but later he didn't remember, their whole connection was being erased by the Shinto magic. He knew this, so instead of giving her information that she'd forget, he instead let her know that he loved her, giving her that happiness, at least for a moment.

How come Taki never remembered or wrote down the name of the town?

>Surely Mitsuha stayed in Itomori through high school
More than likely she moved away to Tokyo. The town was fucking demolished by a freaking rock from space.

A tiny country town like that isn't likely to attempt rebuilding, even with international eye on them and contributions to the townsfolk from across the world. The town was likely losing a lot of its population to a slow decline to the cities.

On top of that, it seems that Mitsuha's father took the flak for the power plant explosion and it seems he told newspapers that it was a plot to get himself re-elected by staging a terrorist attack or something (from what can be implied by the quick newspaper shots in the epilogue). Mitsuha's family probably just moved away from those two factors (economic destruction of their home, and the artificial "scandal").

He didn't forget everything, much like you only remember some details from dreams but the rest is really hazy (because your memory center isn't supposed to be completely on in the cognizant sense during REM sleep).

He also still had the little phone diary thing he kept with Mitsuha until it disappeared at the town crater fence.

On top of that, you have to remember those drawings took fucking days for him to painstakingly remember and put to paper, as he edits from what he feels is wrong or right.

The true ending: Taki and Mitsuha date for a year or so, but break up because despite how much they like each other, Mitsuha is an incredible spendthrift that keeps burning all of the jobless Taki's money on dates to cafes, specifically ordering artisan sweets about Tokyo.

The mutually break up when she's gained 12kg in a year from their unhealthy relationship.

Taki later marries Yotsuha.

I really do think you have your homo-goggles on a bit too tight. I don't disagree that he could have a crush on Taki after seeing Mitsuha-Taki for so long, but it's probably innocuous and more than likely for when Mitsuha is the one inhabiting Taki (because Taki is pretty masculine in his own body).

Only thing I somewhat dislike about the movie's direction was the "opening". It gave away lots of foreshadowing and feels like it is meant for second-time goers who know what happens. I was going to say that it might have been better if it was placed at the end of the film, but that would also mean ruining that sweet final moment, so I'm conflicted.

It IS a delayed action bomb. I kept myself away from spoilers on /a/ ever since it made box office news and /a/ started to discuss it long before any international releases started moving.
I went in having no idea what the plot was about aside from a body swap gimmick.

If you go in like that, you just expect the comet thing everybody's talking about to just be an innocuous wish-granting thing people look up to the sky to and get a magic event happening in their lives, like in other anime.
It looks beautiful and ethereal and there's an aurora-colored jetstream right behind it; of course it's magic!

No, it's a deadly harbinger of doom that comes ever 1200 years to fuck over one particular region in Japan because that place is too beautiful to actually exist.
>>
>>155689145

Am I already dead inside. I went thinking I was going to be sad, but I didn't come close to the feels I felt for 5cm.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie, and the were some pretty emotional scenes, but it's just not on the same level as his previous work.

Body swapping and other unrealistic elements in general just add an air of lightness. Again I'm not trying to bash it, I'm just saying it's just not a tearjerker.

Watching Takaki in 5cm get stuck on a train due to snow thinking he's going to miss seeing Akari and hoping she didn't wait for him. Watching as two people who should have been together can't best distance and time and then just having to deal with it. No other wordly elements. That's just reality. And reality is fucking depressing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftXMLKuSBEo
>>
I even went into this knowing that the girl died and the comet caught me by surprise, I thought it was just going to be something like Mitsuha and Taki start swapping bodies and it turns out she has some illness, and her rural town doesn't have good enough medical care for it but she tries hiding it from him which is hard since he's in her body about half the time. Then, when he realizes what's actually happening, he rushes to the town and either gets there just in time for her to die, or gets there just a bit too late to see her alive.

The actual plot caught me completely by surprise, even considering the opening scenes.
>>
>the body swapping was the family's way of avoiding the disaster

>>
>>155690149
I think the body swapping was done solely for the events in the movie. It was done to prevent the destruction of the village, and it succeeded, there's no reason for it to keep happening.
>>
>>155690067
That's a very good question, but they may have some sort of ancestral ritual call back to the god's "body" in the crater that they spend time each generation going to, so it's not a complete impossibility. They'll probably completely forget WHY they keep doing it every generation though, unless the Miyamizu kami actually steps in to give each generation a magic event to keep the faith/memory alive (like when Mitsuha's grandmother confesses that she also had a body-swapping dream experience in her past without the danger of a comet destroying everything in her life).

Heritage is fucking big for the Japanese, particularly if you're a family with actual ties to the ancient past.

Yeah, but from what we saw their whole shrine and rituals are surrounding the comet and it's eventual return. The shrine's god basically gifted their family with this ability to fuck around with time to save the town when the comet came again.

Same, it was touchingly poignant. We have hope that they'll get together but no promises how it ends up.
>>
>>155690247
I think that can be pretty readily explained by the comet, though. It's still a danger, though not quite as imminent. Hitoha's swapping was probably the first attempt by whatever powers that be at trying to get the town to evacuate with a good margin of error. Futaba's swapping was a second try that also failed. Finally, it took a last-ditch effort with Mitsuha to have the evacuation actually take place, and even then it failed the first time around before Taki drank the spitrice.
>>
When I watched it in the theater I noticed there was a focus on the sliding doors opening/closing but I didn't pay attention enough to see if there was any significance to when they opened/closed.

Mitsuha made a wish upon the comet, and the comet delivers in the form of a giant shard falling right at her town. It was the previous fragment (the "God" they worshipped) that foretold the coming of its brother and gave Taki a chance to save Mitsuha from her wish.

There were two gods at play in this movie.

I just loved the animation. With the combined silence and the frames showing everything exploding and bursting and being throw into the air to be shredded by the plast, it was a stop-your-breath moment.
It was a great payoff, even if it implies a bit too much if you were watching carefully. I noticed during the impact animations that there weren't any bodies drawn into the shots, so it gave away early that Mitsuha succeeded in convincing her father.

It's not supposed to be as sad. 5cm/s is literally a 60 minute film about breaking up with over fucking 10 years, becoming more and more alone and miserable. Would you say this movie is more suited for guys or girls? I'm curious because it seems like mostly guys are into this movie but at the same time it's a romance flick which is more female oriented. Also, Mitsuha was the main character and Taki was the deuteragonist. Mitsuha had more screentime and her story was far more developed than Taki.

I agree. The one-day trip to Tokyo was really a tragic moment when you consider it was the day before the meteor destroyed her. Mitsuha felt so empty without Taki acknowledging she exists, and she just withers away much like his memory of her. Really heartcrushing.

WHY THE FUCK would Taki pass up a knockout 10 out of 10, PRIME motherfucking HOT piece of ass like Miki!?
What the absolute fuck was he thinking!?
Mitsuha literally did all the fucking work for him and all he had to do was not drop his spaghetti and not get all emo on her.
It pisses me off because post ending Taki is going to date Mitsuha for a few weeks/months and realize,
>"Holy shit! I don't really know this girl outside of being in her body, through texts that weren't even meaningful conversations, and telling her 'I love you' on a whim."
For all we and he fucking knows the two could be a terrible match in the long run with chemistry that fails to work together.

Honestly... biggest fucking mistake he'd make in his life, and he's going to regret not staying with her. Mark my fucking words.

I don't think I've ever been so teased by an ending like I was with this movie. Sorry about that, it really was a poor choice of words by using "fun girl" to describe Miki.
She just seems like a more well rounded, experienced girl (not necessarily sexually either) with a lot more to offer in a relationship that Mitsuha ever could for a long time. Sure Miki has the smoking vice but that just adds to the character. She's sweet, charming, mature, and still radiant with energy to live an active life.
Mitsuha on the other hand has spent years of her life being held down by the emotions of having lost Taki, stunting her growth as a person. I feel as though she should have been like Kanae from 5cm, realizing that she has nothing to gain by holding onto feelings for a person that isn't even there for her. Maybe then she could have reunited with Taki with a gleaming smile and excitement. Try to imagine if Rose from Titanic spent the rest of her life depressed, doing nothing after Jack's death other than being bed ridden and filled with sorrow. That's pretty much Mitsuha at the point where they meet at the end, a depressed blob of unfulfilled life and emotions. Same goes for Taki too.
But hey, if Taki wants to stick it out with Mitsuha, obviously that's his choice.

Japs love ambiguous endings like this. Or at least, ones where not everything is entirely settled, or told to the audience.

Murakami does it a lot in his books, for instance (one that always stuck with me was the Norwegian Wood ending).

Western Lit does it a lot too.

It's about allowing the viewer to "take part" in the viewing/reading experience, in a sense. Audiences always have a vision of how things will go based on the rest of a work and on pre-conceived notions. Alienating part of the fans, or confirming only one single thing takes a viewer out. It also helps to keep the movie in the audience's head because they'll think about what happens afterwards.

Better to leave the audience with something to chew over for a while than close things up and be un-memorable.
>>
>>155687202
If a comet can hit Jupiter then a close encounter with Earth remains within the realms of possibility.
>>
>>155695519
yea but when everyone does it, it becomes un-memorable. I could see it being a niche back then, but now it commonly used as a cop out for bad writes, and frankly I'm quite sick of it. Id rather see a decent closed ending than another open ending.
>>
>>155692989
Ah, I didn't realize that her visit to Tokyo was the day right before the festival until you pointed it out. Anyway, because of that, I just realized that when she picked up her phone that day she was holding onto hope for it to be from the Taki that knows her when she said "Oh, it's just you Tessie."

So Mitsuha's contact with Taki actually ended for some time before his date with senpai even though the movie presented the body swapping up until then side by side (scene right after date was day of 1st meteor in Itomori). The viewer is forced to assume that Mitsuha cut her hair right before the festival because she thought that Taki and Onodera had gotten together, as that was the order in which things were shown, but actually she cut her hair cause Taki didn't recognize her when she went to Tokyo to find him after their body swapping abruptly ended and their phones couldn't contact each other anymore. Also, this means that their contact didn't end because the first meteor killed Mitsuha, but because of some magical shenanigans of the second meteor that Taki saw on the night of his date with senpai.

The timeline of the movie is too confusing for it to be grasped without deliberation since a plot twist was set up by deliberately showing the order of events misleadingly.

Also, file name.

I kind of prefer it this way. There's a painful bittersweetness about the huge realm of possibilities, especially when you're really invested in the characters and their relationship. We know they met. We know they recognize an importance in one another. At the very least we can imagine they'll be happy.

And thankfully, there is always fanart and doujins (h or non) and fanfiction if I ever want to see the way someone else thinks of the end.

There's even a Nicholas Sparks-esque novel/movie that was super popular here about a man and woman who live in the same house at different times and send messages back and forth and fall in love. That's not too different.

>Was anyone else unable to not compare 5cm while watching this? There are very similar cut scenes and angles. I'm sure he's just paying homage but it's quite a lot.
I felt that about Shin Godzilla, and EVA, both are Amano though. but the angles and editing, all of it is just a live action EVA.

The normie-repulsing is what makes Kizu and the Rebuilds great.

Not disagreeing with you or something, just making a statement.
>>
>>155695965
I was simply stating why, out of all of the anime films to come over in the past few years, it's Kimi no Na Wa that got shilled by even The Economist.
>>
How's the novel? Worth buying when it comes out in English?

The movie really stuck with me. I'd like to experience it in a different form.
>>
>>155695687
It ended pretty abruptly for her considering she died.
>>
>you've seen Kimi no Na wa

What other reasons are there to not kill yourself in 2017?
>>
>>155696154
I still haven't gotten Persona 5.
>>
>>155696154
Eureka Seven movie number 1 in the fall.

That's the only reason I won't kill myself til at least the end of 2019
>>
>>155696154
4.0 ain't out yet.
>>
>>155696223
>e7 movie
What? Will be it about another timeline again?
>>
>>155696154
I haven't seen it again.
>>
>>155696262
3 movie series.

Movie 1 is going to be the First Summer of Love, and feature Renton's dad.

Movie 2 and 3 will follow this, but what they'll be is unknown so far. All we know is that it's going to differ from the tv show in some ways.

>their phones couldn't contact each other anymore.
Their phones could never contact each other. She was hoping that when she was in Tokyo they would be able to but it still didn't work.

Their contact (body swapping) ended because she gave him her braid/rope on that day which was the link between them.
>>
>>155692218
That wasn't planned at all according to an invterview with Shinkai, He was suprised as well when he saw it. It's just the animators doing what they wanted to do.
>>
>>155696141
Yeah, but for her she wouldn't have noticed it ended because they didn't swap at regular intervals. For him he realized because for days and then weeks afterward they didn't swap.

>>
Why is there so much fanart of Mitsuha tied up?
>>
>>155696372
Don't tease me like that.

I wish it was on the blu-ray. I'd buy it in a second. I still will

>>155696390
I don't have a screencap, but when Mitsuha was riding her bike towards the meeting near the 'god's body', there's a panty shot.

Also when she falls when running, I think.
>>
>>155696390
When shes cycling to the valley
>>
>>155696354
They should've given the pantie shot to Mitsuha(male)

Some do, some don't.

As an American, I take every opportunity to be barefoot that I can get, even in other people's homes.
>>
>>155697120
I dont anymore but my parents used to tell me not to go barefoot around the house cause it was unhygienic or something but i dont blame them since they were superstitious and old
>>
>>155697120
Many American tv shows seems to show the people there wear shoes inside their houses, even with carpets inside. So, you know, fiction sometimes based itself on reality.

Since the body swap was temporally displaced, in theory couldn't Taki have gone and found himself, 3 years younger, and had sex with himself?

I'm pretty firm in the belief that sex with your clone or doppleganger isn't sex, it's masturbation. But what about sex with yourself, in someone else's body?
>>
>>155697361
>But what about sex with yourself, in someone else's body?
If you're also in your own body, sure.

That poses and interesting question. If Taki had taken Mitsuha's body to Tokyo and fucked his Junior High self...

>Since the body swap was temporally displaced, in theory couldn't Taki have gone and found himself, 3 years younger, and had sex with himself?
Delicious
>>
>>155696154
I haven't seen it five times yet.
>>
>>155697361
But think of it this way:
Then he would be in junior high, get laid, and then years later, enter a girl's body and realize he was the same girl he slept with.
He would figure out that he'd actually just fucked himself.

That's some traumatizing shit dude.

What if I step on a tack a the office
>>
>>155697524
Holy shit.
Doujins when.
>>
>>155697524
What if he somehow carved/tattooed/etched his name into her pussy so that when he sees it again he remembers?

Or shaves his name into her pubes and tells her to keep it that way forever?
>>
Rustle has a body switch doujin that's pretty good, so long as we're on the topic
