I've watched this, and I don't understand one word nihonese.
So far, it looks like it's Avatar by Cameron, where meatbags upload their consiciousness into giant mecha-bodies instead of blue smurf-people to harvest some kind of mineral that seems to allow instant teleportation (probably the setting's valuable unobtanium that allows space travel). The crew looks like space miners fighting against other space mining corporations trying to secure those red teleport rocks.
I do have my doubts that the consciousness of the pink feral machine that walks on all fours is human.
Also, sweet giant mecha bikes.
If I understood more of the plot, I might get why Academy-girl's consciousness-sphere thingy is now with the cast, instead together with those two other guys she was at the beginning.

So far, looks interesting and quite straight-forward.
There will be some shooty-kabloie-robo-punch-in-the-face action to keep it entertaining.

I ended up watching the episode raw, and even if I didn't understand most of the technical bullshit I loved it. I love when SF stories tried weird shit like these giant space robot controlled by consciousness transfer. It's more interesting than "muh big battleships and laser canons".
It wasn't necessarily the best first episode of the season, but it's the one that got me excited the most fo the rest of the series.

The western netflix audience can bingewatch things. If the first episode doesn't look that hyper-interesting, they can still jump forward to the second one, and then the third one, and then the fourth one, until they see an interesting part with perhaps some plot, or nice fanservice, or cool action sequences.

Watching with those subs, a few things are clearer. Some comments:

1. Maya is an orphan and wants to make money. She's a bit dense yet still smart enough about tech stuff earn a scholarship.

2. Maya was intentionally abandoned by the professor of that academy ship, but we don't know the real reason why yet, unless he's really just that much of an asshole towards poor people getting scholarships. He did value the other trainee but treated Maya like shit,

3. There seems to be a general problem with illegal mining operations carried out by technically legal companies, but the law enforcement authorities aren't giving them equal priority.

4. It seems to be implied that everyone other than Maya and Claire doesn't have their real body anymore, or at least they might not be able to return to it at this time.

5. Ido seems to have a suspicious amnesia. Likely tied to the larger overarching plot.

It was, but it also managed to be realistic and still cute, which is extremely rare for an anime romance.
