I feel bad because they didn't really intend to do One Piece, it got packaged in with some other shows and it wasn't until they'd already poured too much money in to drop it that they realized just how violent it was, and while their output was far from stellar, most of their bad reputation comes from the way OP was handled. Thing is, offended parents (usually of the christian type) stopped being a force a long time ago, long before 4Kids bought this stuff. They were basically afraid of complaints, scandals and lawsuits, like it happened in earlier times to comics (comic code) or DnD, so they removed anything that could have the remotest possibility of making someone angry.
Of course it didn't work, because, well, one or two people always complain.
And americanization was simply business.
I honestly doubt the uncensored, non-americanized versions would have caused them much trouble or financial losses, however.

The Shaman King dub was still inconsistent as fuck. Usui Horokeu was introduced as himself, but then he gives himself the American nickname of Trey Racer. What annoying about this is that there are still characters on the show still referring to Trey as Horokeu, so what's the point of giving him that nickname in the first place.
