I think the story was exceptionally well crafted for anime. Like stellar and one of the best in many many years. It may not be all that deep, complex or convoluted but its solid, simple, heartwarming and everything works, is planned and considered. Highly competent in everything it attempts. Doing simple brilliantly rather than trying to be DEEP and ending up a tangled mess like something like Flip Flappers did.

In any case, the show is very close to Undertale.
Both Kaban and MC are fallen children, they have no idea where they are, how they got there or who they are.
They both instantly have a caretaker introduced to them at the start of their journey and explains to them about their worlds.
Both want to know about their real identities.
Everyone in both worlds are friendly (any attempts to harm the MC are just faux pass) and pose no harm to the main characters (except Ceruleans and that flower thing).
Graphics and animation on both are shittily made for their time.

Many Kemono Friends fans actually appreciate the animation itself though in a legitimate way. It works well to give the series an underdog meta-moe feeling that makes you want to support it and reinforces the child like innocence and naivety of the animal girl characters. It creates a contrast between the relaxing cute show that is going on in the foreground and the subtle hints of a past apocalyptic disaster in the background. Not to mention the show would be a literal slideshow if animated in 2D or the character designs would have to be massively simplified, the patterns on the animal girls like spots and stripes would be extremely difficult to keep consistent in hand drawn animation.

Kemono is free of all the bulshit shoehoring of stuff that ruins the pace of the game.

You know, kemono is actually the Doom of anime, the proggression of the adventure and characters feels natural.

In doom you start proggressive until all the demons and weapons are available to fight and will be thrown at you with little to no mercy, no need to stop for plot unless you want to.

In kemono we gradually see the characters grow and are exposed to little bits of their world without questioning them too hard and the little bits that advance the plot come just naturally with the exploring part of the adventure.

Dont compare the preachy poorly paced shit that undertale is to kemono, try to compare it to a game that actually gives a damn about letting its gameplay tell about the progression.

Vega Core is pretty much Kaban Sacrifice when you think about it, a culmination of all you have learned in the story so far.

I'm sick of people unfairly shitting on KF's animation. It was not BBK/BRNK-tier good indeed, but it's clearly not as bad as people trying to say. It was cheap and limited, but animators did knew their limitations and made the best out of what they had. It wasn't perfect, but that imperfection was the part of it's charm. It had unique style and aesthetics. It was creative because of said limitations. And that's what I value the most.

But the thing you're missing is that animation and graphics can contribute positively to the overall quality even if they aren't fantastic from a technical standpoint.

There are different dimensions to animation and graphics, just like with any creative endeavor. You can play a simple piece of music well on a piano and have a profound effect on the audience, or you could play a full orchestral suite poorly and bore them to to tears. The technical difficulty is not the only thing that matters.

Are we seriously going to pretend we like the horrible CG now? We were shitting on it while it was airing because we can look beyond that.

IIRC there were 10 people on the project, but by creator people are referring to the director. He was given an unusual amount of creative control because apparently the franchise was being treated as a write-off, so a lot of what ended up making the show so good can be attributed pretty directly to him.

The episode itself is heavy on the exposition dumping and light on actual character interaction. Serval basically just talks at Kaban for 10 minutes while they stroll through the Savannah, and then it ends with a cheesy battle that doesn't have much tension because they spent too much time explaining the setting and not enough establishing the characters so that we'd have a stake in their conflict there.
