At this point, Bleach, arguably, should have ended. From this point on, Ichigo even with his powers restored was far too OP. This led to a full spectrum power inflation to rebase him as being some kind of an underdog. But having already spent a great deal of time going through this thematic element in the first half of the story, having it repeat identically in the second half, yet only with a fresh coat of paint was painfully transparent in Kubo's limited scope.

Sure the KUBO moments were great, and the enjoyment was only derived through significant legitimate theoretic discussion and occasional shitposting, but that's outside the scope of the manga. In any case, his spiral ultimately culminated in his final fight with Ywach. Whereupon, he achieved the pinnacle of his own power once again. A power that made him a threat greater than Ywach, and Kubo rebased Ichigo a third fucking time, by going "lolnope; Almighty."

And then proceeded to rub salt in this freshly opened wound by making the protagonist and vehicle of the entire story, declare "it's hopeless."

For what its worth, that's probably where Ichigo was the MOST human, despite his convoluted state of being between hollow, human, quincy, and shinigami. But the handling of this moment of helplessness was so poorly executed, that the end result after all these years, is this discussion of why he's such a boring character.

So the answer is, he wasn't really boring. He was a much better character than Naruto or Luffy. But by him stopping as a character, and instead becoming an object to balance Kubo's variety of interesting, but poorly executed ideas, is what ultimately killed him as a good character. That's why he became boring.

This never happened, in fact Ichigo was kept away from fights and story because he would've ended things in mere moments.
Ichigo never once gets to show off his full power after the HM arc. As we know now, he could've brought out his mask at any point in time during his fight against Yhwach when he came to SS, but he didn't. Ichigo never used his powers to the best of his ability, Yhwach didn't give him that opportunity. Yhwach explicitly says "oh shit I need to start taking you seriously now, or else I am fucked" to Ichigo's hollow melded shikai.
When the bankai came out Yhwach instantly broke it because he didn't want to deal with it, this despite Ichigo's own confession that he couldn't use his hollow melding very well yet, so in the end Ichigo never realized his full potential.
Later on Ichigo oneshots Yhwach with a getsuga from his bankai, just a simple getsuga nothing more. If anything Ichigo is among, if not the strongest character in his own manga and therefore bringing him into any fight would resolve it too quickly.

It wasn't Kubo in the interview, but they were discussing Bleach and notes Kubo gave them answering a few questions.
Mainly Hisagi's bankai, the King's name and the quincies relation to the king. Kubo makes fun of Hisagi as well, saying he isn't "protagonist material" and therefore won't be in the novel, the bastard. No talk about the release date of the novel, maybe we'll know when Kubo has his own interview.

I think a lot of manga and anime try to go for a boring character because they want the audience to relate better. A character who is interesting is a character who is flawed and that means you are going to make a different story than most battle shounens want to make.

Luffy and Naruto or whoever else are just as boring, but they have more interesting stories and that makes them seem more interesting. If you stuck Luffy or whatever other battle shounen protag into Bleach, they would become boring because Bleach is boring. But Tite Kubo was good at drawing hot guys so Ichigo is decently hot if nothing else.
