I don't know where I implied this, and I'm aware Japan doesn't care about them that much. But I have seen many anime that do reference things like the witch burnings and other stuff, so it's not like they're completely unaware of what has been done in the churchs name. I'm simply saying that in addition to them seeing it as cool and mysterious, there are many events which make it very easy to paint the church as villains. It's not like some random rebellion against an establishment for the sake of being edgy either because the church isn't as big in Japan as it is in the west. There is no need for you to be upset.

At its best it's a place that allows a gathering of people to share in a belief of bettering themselves. It's dragged humanity through the darkest times, been a place where lovers meet, friends meet, and was/is often times the pillar of small town communities.

And yes, of course, with all things good there's a bad side to it to, those looking to prosper off of other people's good will. Those who steal the money meant for the poor, abuse the pillar of community to brainwash followers, etc. and so on.

I simply stated why it's easy to paint them as villains. And, as always, people like you get all upset because it offends you to see that. I think the whole helping other people aspect of the church is very good, I never said the church as a whole was evil. I just think a large part of it is very easy to make into a villain for a story. Yeah, Japan does it because they think it looks cool, but you seem to be trying to trivialize their knowledge of "bad" things that parts of the church did in the past, for some reason.
