well, at least the red dot is putting a little thought into it instead of being oblivious to coloring a face in. exception is of course a minimalist style that some japs use, but a lot arent really going for minimalism and dont exercise it in any other aspects of the drawing. ideally, of course, youd use the red for shading and first and foremost subsurface scattering. actually, ive noticed a lot of jap artists dont really have a good understanding of color theory vs a lot of western stuff, but maybe im just not looking at badly drawn western stuff much.

The problem with this is that it only applies to white people in realistic artstyles. When you draw other races in a cartoony artstyle and still flush the face, it looks really weird.
