I was skipping around rewatching random pieces of GX to refresh my memory the other day. I forgot how actually decent that season was. Aside from the directionlessness and some of the stupid turns like topdad, it was still very symphogear. Individual scenes were generally solid and fun.

Also the fact that Carol's singing literally had no purpose other than to be an excuse to trigger X-drive made me laugh all over again. I had almost completely forgotten that.

They need to kill off some characters. The cast has become too bloated.

That's actually a completely reasonable number of characters to manage. GX's problem with its characters was that GX was poorly handled in general, and couldn't balance screentime between the characters it had because it couldn't balance screentime in general.

The only problem with a 6-person main cast is that it ensures no new characters will be added as permanent members of the main cast. Any recruitment, character introduction or villain redemption arc gets marred by the fact that they will obviously never be relevant again just due to cast size limitations, like Elf9. But, at the same time, they've played that card 3 seasons in a row so maybe it's time to try something else anyways.

Yeah, I think my feelings of it on the first watchthrough were coloured strongly by the fact that I just don't like seeing Bikki down in the dumps, especially if it doesn't feel like it's for a good reason. It was too mean to her character, which made it (and still makes it) hard to appreciate the things that were done well while Hibiki was struggling.
