Dude, he runs headlong at the kid and impales him. His intention was simple: kill witnesses. It's as the kid dies that he realises his regret, and pathetically tries to console the kid. An accident is if your tire explodes and your car careens into someone. An accident lacks intent. Guts' intention was to kill anything that moved. What went wrong for Guts was the intent itself, not the execution of it. Even if he had at all considered that he'd have to murder innocent children to achieve his goal (doubtful), he thought he was too much of a edgy hard cunt to care.

He had spent so long convincing himself he was a nihilistic butcher -- this is an important moment that shatters his own self-image, and where Guts' character grows to start appreciating the value of human life.

It's really diminished if you think of it as an accident.

It's really more the kid's dad's fault than guts' if you think about it. If you do some shady shit maybe don't be so surprised when someone does shady shit back.

I actually cried when I read that scene because of how Guts acted when the kid and his dad acted extremely similar to himself and Gambino.
It was just too much to see him watch a young boy who represented Guts' lost childhood innocence be killed painfully in front of him.
It's probably the only scene in Berserk that has made me cry.
