Yes, he plans to do a sequel some day. The christmas cake Rakka drawings are from about a decade ago, so the plot might've evolved quite a bit from then. Here's what he said in 2015:

Not really. Niea explores its characters in certain aspects, and does so quite intensively - it's one of the most character-driven shows that I know of, on par with Haibane Renmei and Aria, but much more subtle. And because of the subtleness it often gets missed.

Niea doesn't exactly work as a comedy, much like Nichijou doesn't, but comedic parts work well to complement the SoL and, to some degree, to present the characters as well.

As important as Konaka is to almost all the projects he's involved in, I always feel it's important to acknowledge the role of Yasuyuki Ueda, whose creative influence as a producer has become exceedingly rare these days. Just from reading a few interviews he was featured in for lain and Texhnolyze, he seems to have been integral to crafting both series--perhaps moreso than Konaka.

Haibane and NieA aside, yeah, I always get the sense that ABe's role in lain was more significant than just being responsible for the original character designs and the general art direction.

I've always been uniquely disappointed in HR: it's a very meritable series, but I was expecting something as quiet and slow and lonely as Texhnolyze (despite that I haven't even seen all of that yet).

Once again, it's a great series, but I'm still waiting for something that captures the feeling of its more somber art extras.

Has Abe worked on any manga?

It's kinda interesting. I haven't looked at all of ABe's Haibane artwork so the one you uploaded is the first time I've seen that, and it definitely has the cold, faded character of all of the stuff he's done for Texhnolyze. I think ABe even mentioned that he was switching between working on both series' illustrations so I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them were created in tandem (he also mentioned that it was easy for him to work on something like Texhnolyze after an uplifting work like Haibane).

It's not related to ABe as much--it might ultimately be a Hamasaki thing, since he brought Hidetoshi Kaneko and Atelier BWCA (RIP) on for Shigurui a few years later--but Texhnolyze's gorgeous background artwork was so important in setting its tone.

Also, you should definitely finish Texhnolyze. What episode are you on?

I've had Haibane Renmei on BD for two years and haven't worked up the nerve to watch it once. I love Lain and NieA, but for some reason i have this hesitation when thinking about HR.

One day I'm going to find out where, if anywhere, ABe based the design of the town on. I know most of it looks generic, old European but there's enough art of it that I wouldn't be surprised if he used specific references.

Well shit, I did some research and someone on a forum who had been with ABe at a convention wrote this:

It's because it's more low-key, very low-budget, no real narrative etc. But I loved it. The characters were lovable and it captured that sense of daily dread from having a shitty life with no free time really well.

It's mainly the fact that it is unpolished and of inconsistent quality in comparison to Haibane or Lain. It was made as a means for the staff to cool off and do something less serious after working on Lain and it shows.

I'm not sure it was pro immigration/diversity though. It struck a pretty neutral tone throughout and depicted plenty of both positives and negatives. It's one of the reasons why I like it along with how melancholic it is at times.

I liked it but it felt unfinished, honestly. A lot of unresolved plot lines. Like people criticize Haibane sometimes for not explaining the Toga etc. but that wasnt really plot critical, and was completely intentionally left to interpretation, but Niea doesn't really resolve any of it's plot threads. The whole spaceship thing at the end was fantastic though, that kind of thing is the exact type of ambiguity that is good. I think the spaceship and the main character are the best parts of it, and I bet if the show was 24 episodes and had time to explore its themes a little more it could've easily been as good as Haibane.

I had the same problem the first time I tried to watch Texhnolyze, I had just finished Yu Yu Hakusho (for like the 8th time) and I couldn't stand the pacing, then I watched a year or so later after finishing Here and There Now and Then, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
