It's meant to be a deconstruction of shojo romance tropes by inverting all the characters in some way from expectations, but keeping the same story structure. If you're not familiar with the things its referencing you might not get much more out of it that some kind of strange whiplash back and forth between cringe comedy and romance, but there really is a more sophisticated structure there.

It's easy to think "these autist otaku are ridiculous" until you realize that every character in the series is an otaku for *something*, only with varying degrees of social adjustment. See: car otaku, fashion otaku, idol otaku, job otaku, and 80's otaku. I can't remember their names, but I remember the characters and each one is balls deep in their interest, even if its only subconsciously for one or two.
