It's one of those concepts that only work in manga, but it's so good because the Old Man eventually gets accepted and fades into the background and Sumire is a real person at the end, at least in the minds of her friends.

The first series was Sumire 17 sai it didn't last long, then it got remade as Sumire 16 sai and lasted 55 chapters. Which is ok because the premise was already mostly played out by the time it ended and it probably would've overstayed its welcome if it lasted any longer.
