There's no rationality or believable motive to Kanai's behavior that has him give unconditional love to someone he's not really close to, only dated a few times and only initially pursued for the way she looked that doesn't have to somewhat revolve around the mangaka's peculiar take on Freudian psychology, such to explain why he's the perfect guy for Akane. For that criteria, his backstory doesn't have to make actual sense from a male perspective; it's only there to satisfy her character's needs.

Principally Akane's needs. He also exists as an object for Hanabi's affection, a love that must goes unrequited, because she's like family to him.
