One of those manga where the art style really solidifies during the run. Really interesting to see the difference from the first chapter. Aikawa's noticeable, but it's really most apparent in Maki he becomes a bit less lean in the face.

On topic, it's because there's an actual relationship between the MCs. It's not incredibly deep, but there's a little more going on than "random beta did something nice, instantly flood panties." Maki intrigues Aikawa, so he fucks with him and Maki's enough of a stick in the mud for it to be amusing. Maki's got more to him than is usual for these sorts of MCs. Again, not a lot, but enough to make him have more presence. Just entertaining back and forth.

I think it'd be more interesting if there was a bit more to the concept

The thing I dont like about manga with these concepts is that its only "will you date cute girl if she has a penis (that you've never seen)?" and it doesnt really come across as a particularly difficult choice. The MC never really has any questions about how a relationship like that would work in the future, how society would percieve them, questions about starting a family, questions about attraction to the trap going away after their body changes, etc. So in the end its fairly inoffensive and chapter after chapter of "She's cute and im blushing! Should I???"

Exactly my thoughts. I had the same problems with Boku Girl. Aikawa is way too feminine to actually make us think that it's a man, and the overall tone is less than serious.
