Given what they were trying to adapt, I think they did a good job. Once they were able to get into After Story (season 2 episode 10) it becomes great. Season 1 and the beginning of Season 2 suffers from trying to adapt all of the extra routes, though. I would have liked to have seen a cut down version that focuses more on the Nagisa route without the changes they had to make to it in order to accommodate the other stories. Not sure how you could make it work, though, as the VN story is so dependent upon there being multiple routes you have to play through. So I'll again say that given the difficulty of what they were trying to adapt, they did well.

It works better in the game. You have to play through most of the school arc routes, collecting light orbs. Once you've done enough, After Story unlocks. You then play through After Story and get the bad ending, where Ushio dies. Tomoya then sees the illusionary world where the girl (Ushio) tells him if he ever needs to save anyone to use the lights from that world. Then you go back and get some more light orbs, and finally go through After Story again once you have them all. When you get to the point where Nagisa dies Tomoya then uses the light orbs to save her.

Anyone who liked the show at all should definitely try the VN. Almost everything in the school arc is substantially better, especially Nagisa's route. The girls you can date other than her are Kyou (and Ryou), Tomoyo, Kotomi, Fuko, and Yukine. After Story is pretty similar to the show but they had to cut out some stuff to adapt it.
