I liked Kemono Friends but you cant dispute that its essentially a glorified kids show. Most western anime fans are teenagers or manchildren that cant just watch something because they enjoy it and the target audience isnt old enough to read subtitles or understand why the characters are speaking a language they cant understand.

Let's not forget that anime basically just means animation in Japan. In the west we've had our fair share of autistically animated shows too, and it would be pretty weird (even for a westaboo) to like some of the shit we've had, even though it was relatively popular here. The entry level is much lower when it's something that just shows up on TV.

It goes both ways I guess. It's not that weird for kemono friends to not be a show westerners go out of their way to try, while still being popular in Japan. I don't think that really implies as much as people might think.

As someone who hyped it since it appeared in the seasonal chart I guess I could give you my insight.

It's cute animal girls doing cute shit.

I'm a big monstergirl fag so this pleases me, I was also hyping Nyanko days and was carefully optimistic about Dragon Maid for that very same reason, cute animal/monster girls doing cute shit.

To my surprise Nyanko was an ending theme with some animation, dragon maid was decent but not exactly what I expected from a coolkyou adaptation and Kemono friends actually made me rewatch Attenborough documentaries at episode 2, also made me remember how much fun I had watching at the Otters do otter stuff at my local zoo when I was a child.

Simply put kemono friends is actually good and not offensive to the eyes like handshakers was, I'm not talking about the CG, but the shitty direction and environment design as well as that fucking camera direction making the unbearable multicut fence climbing scene actually look like a masterpiece.

Series with very cheap CGI like SeHa Girls or Kemono Friends have always been a thing in Japan.
Also, there's already been series with higher-quality CG being made there as well.

Kemono Friends' popularity is an accident, but the passion behind it's creation isn't. A handful of people who really like their little character design and world project doing the best they can at the end of the budget with little hope for big franchise success. Nico viewers came in because it looked like something they could laugh at but the combination of factors made them curious, and then they were hooked by what it does well.

Not only does the west not have the context of this franchise that has never seen any exposure here, but most people who would subscribe to Crunchyroll and identify as "Anime fans" would turn their noses up at this show because it doesn't look mature enough to them. The remainder that are willing to dig a little deeper or have some patience with the animation end up on the same bus when they find the multitude of reasons to like it.

I avoided this like the plague just to marathon 11 episodes thanks /a/
