Japan is absolute cancer when it comes to promoting shows. Anything that has memes becomes popular overnight and stays popular until it ends because artists will whip something up to get on the bandwagon and get noticed, people notice that artists like it and it's a circle from there. Japan didn't even like the first few episodes but once it started taking off with memes, suddenly they're revising their opinion of those episodes along with /a/ and saying how the show is legitimately good. It's not. The hype for the final episode is from nothing special in show but that won't stop the people already too deep in from trying to convince everyone else otherwise.

Just to clarify: I don't mean to suggest Kemono Friends is bad. It's my anime of the season. I just think the anime industry as a whole plays things a little too safe. The producers of friends weren't expecting to make any money off of their show, so they just made the show they felt like making and their authenticity showed through.

It doesn't feel like a checklist of tropes. There's an actual story with suspense, action, mystery, character development and drama but not melodrama. The show is generally peaceful upbeat so the darker moments come in stark contrast.

First KF has its autistic charm. Its character design and graphics are eccentric thus you didn't know what you expected. Its character lineup gives you chance to dig in the memes. It held back some background story so you could participate in deciphering it which turned out to be not way over your head such that you were able to obtain the gratification of being a pseudo-deepfag. It's been something different from mainstream anime and it went beyond people's expectation.
Expectation is very important. KF started as garbage and turned out to be mediocre and people laud it as some god-tier work because it exceeded people's expectation. A work would be considered garbage if it started god-tier and ended up mediocre.

No, it's not. I've tried every mobage under the sun and while GBF might be the best of them, the gameplay is still not good. You very quickly get to the point where every battle is a routine, just made different by swapping out your elements and using the most efficient character of that element. You press the same skills, summon the same summons, attack and rinse and repeat until you need to recharge. It's better but it's still a mediocre game.

Aside from the fairly lengthy main story, It had sidequests focused just on character development. The issue is that it was all just tons of text with no VA and clearly low production values.

Also, I'd say that the waifu appeal of the mobage was hurt by the art all being SD, rather than the usual full sized art + SD sprites of other mobile games. The story quests also avoided any shipping teases related to the player avatar. Each character had one sentence they could say in the home screen that was kind of a shipping tease, and that was the closest it got. They only really started pandering with waifu stuff very late into the game's life when they added a bonding system, but it was pretty clearly tacked on.

The gameplay was a direct clone of Merc Storia, a mobage which is still alive. That likely was part of the problem though, considering how Merc Storia clearly had higher production values than Kemono Friends as far as menus, backgrounds and battle animations go.
