Like the symbolism of the coffee cups at End of Evangelion I don't have a graphic for yet. Two lone coffee cups on a table with only a pot of coffee to complement them. Two containers of fluid just like the bodies of lillin holding the LCL in with their A.T. fields. The cups are Shinji and Asuka. The coffee pot is the rest of humanity in the sea of LCL. In this scene, Rei, masquerading as the deceased Asuka(Rei can only assume the form of the dead) breaks down Shinji's field, but not with love, as with the others, but with hatred. His field opens a crack with anger and instrumentality begins with the table flipping and the coffee mugs being smashed, and lying broken amidst a pool of coffee. Because it's popular, and because of the show's creator. There's always some waifu war when it comes to anime, but Evangelion is an exception because the director openly has favorites, and continues to pander to people who like his favorites, Asuka and Kaworu.

In the original, the prime top tier waifu was Rei, and most people will be attracted to Rei because she's cute and not a bitch. But the people who obsess over EVA end up copying Anno's affection for Asuka. Others validate their own choice in waifu because it's also the director's choice.

The waifu war in NGE is in many ways artificial, and it's a necessary component to keep Evangelion discussed.
