Remember how his parents left him with nothing? He's not the kind of person who's gonna scheme, but in the back of his mind he might have felt like marrying into a decent family might be a good thing in his situation. So he agrees without thinking as he laughs it off but he also says something like "not many people would want to marry me either". It worked out well for him in the end.
