It seems they were in league with the Ceruleans all along. Once the human scourge popped up in the park again (from the remains of the last one, clinging to an article of clothing thoughtlessly thrown away years ago), they moved fast to secure the future of Japari Park.

By gaining the human's trust, they were able to lead it to the animal holding cells in the amusement park and successfully restrain it to where it could no longer fight back. They even showed it some of the cruelties its predecessors had committed, and convinced it to give up quietly. The Ceruleans dropped the act, and the park was in harmony once again.

Kaban's powers are something to be reckoned with

Kaban finds out how to get to the human world. Serval isn't able to leave Japari Park because if she gets too far from the Sandstar, she turns into a serval. They have a tearful goodbye.

When Kaban arrives on the main land, the show suddenly switches to a black-and-white live-action sequence. A child who appears to be Kaban wanders around looking for people but sees only abandoned buildings, including the amusement park from the ED, which she explores with wonder and amazement, but sadness because of how alone she is.

When she turns to return to her boat, a serval appears to her. Kaban knows this is her friend who must have stowed away on the boat in secret. The sight of her friend in such a state, and the knowledge that there is no home for her anymore, causes her to cry. Serval turns and runs and Kaban chases her crying out for her to wait.

When Kaban finally catches up to her, she discovers that she's been led to a thicket of overgrowth filled with all kinds of animals. The scene becomes colorized the instant she lays eyes on it. Kaban knows that this is the real world and that there is no turning back, but she's also learned how to live among the animals. She appears optimistic and heads off to her new adventure with her companion at her side. Maybe her home is still out there.

In fact, maybe she's not even based on firsthand memories, but on the general "lore" about humans that Friends pass around. It kind of makes sense, actually - a human-Friend newly generated from a corpse or DNA or even a hat might not be able to read immediately, but if the memories Kaban was generated from include "humans can read," then it'd make sense for her to be "born" with the ability.
