Goku is likely already stronger than Beerus. This explains why Goku directly disobeyed Beerus when Beerus threatened to kill Goku at the start of the universal tournament arc. Goku knew Beerus' hakai wouldn't work on him.

Remember Goku vs "Monaka" (Beerus)? Remember how "Monaka" struggled to keep up with Goku even though Goku was in his base form the entire fight? Yeah it's true that the costume slowed Beerus down but if this fight happened at the start of Super, Beerus would have destroyed Goku regardless of the handicap.

Based on Beerus' reaction to Goku's kaioken I would honestly say this was the exact moment where Goku DID surpass Beerus in terms of raw power. However, Beerus has a lot of other things going for him such as.

So a direct fight will definitely be a massive struggle for both Goku and Beerus.

Also Whis did say that if Goku and Vegeta joined forces they could beat Beerus. This means that Vegito blue was stronger than a God of Destruction.

Beerus falls in love with Goku.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina (Whis) with the Saiyan's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls him, and is overjoyed to find out that he has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when Beerus recounts the previous day's confessions to Goku, he only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the Saiyan he called is not the same Saiyan he fell in love with. In fact, he doesn't exist in this universe at all. He is Kakarrot's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the God of Destruction's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of his crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of CHAOS.

Which makes the whole plot of the arc retarded, because Beerus was looking for an entertaining challenge. Fighting someone 70% of your power can be challenging and enjoyable, fighting someone who is "as a small tree compared to a massive castle" cannot be interesting or challenging.

I've never seen the GoD as a power surpassing point. Wasn't every GoD just a regular powerful warrior who was offered the job and accepted? There's nothing aside from their hakai at this point that makes them stand out from Goku or Vegeta now that they too have trained with an angel. Beerus stopped being a steppingstone of power as soon as Super Saiyan Blue came into the picture. Even the series is starting to completely dwarf the GoD's with all the new angels and unknown powerlevels in the universes. I've always felt like Beerus was simply there to help Goku transcend into a higher level of fighter. I think people just assume Goku vs Beerus was supposed to be the DBS endgame.
