First volume has sold around 30k. I have no idea whether that's good or bad, as far as Jump SQ series go.

Anyway, the first chapter was okay, nothing amazing. Just the Nth version of "Japanese folklore creatures are real and living among us in secret". I'd read more just to see what kind of series it ends up being.

If he were weak/useless the chapter would have been totally different. Dialogue would have been different, the scenes would have been played differently, all the concrete contents of the chapter would have been played differently, and obviously they would have appealed to a different audience more.
The only thing that would have been the same is the excuse for plotline, if you want to see it from a 100% abstract point of view that much.

They're two different but similar ways of getting a story started that are very common in the first chapters of shonen series. After the first chapter it honestly doesn't make much of a difference which one was used to start it since they end up in pretty much the same place.

He can't be right if the chapter would have been totally different with a different characterization, and it obviously would have been. The MC not being useless and weak makes tons of huge concrete differences, and in this kind of chapter it's much more important than the excuse used for putting on paper the interactions between the characters.
