It doesn't sound like much, but it spawned several gags and character archetypes that are still used today. What's impressive is that it somehow still feels fresh. With a high count of female characters, you'd think it'd follow the harem formula, but nearly every girl hates the MC, making it kind of a reverse harem, which makes the show all the more entertaining.

It was also made by an all-star staff, led by Mamoru Oshii, way before he moved onto things like Ghost in the Shell. Even Hideaki Anno animated an episode.

I'm 31 episodes in and watching it slowly. I was told there actually will be a plot developing. Is it more like Ranma 1/2 arcs or was I lied to?

That show is one of my favorites. And it is even more amazing if you consider how original it was and how it influence anime and magan in general.

Besides Lum is the prototype of a waifu.

Lum herself doesn't hate him. She just gets jealous of him hitting on the other girls and chases after him throughout the entire series until he admits he likes her (at least in the end of the manga).
