You might want to take another look at Aeon Flux then. Visually the movie looks good. Problem is it looks nothing like Ghost in The Shell.

Unlike every other adaptation there are little to no call backs to the source material. Every GITS anime no matter how far removed from the look of the manga still had an air of "Shirow-ness" to it from the guns to the mecha. This has none from what they've shown. Even if they were going for the look of the 95 movie they failed at that. In fact The Matrix did a better job in getting that look than this does. Shame that the Wachowskis arent making this. Though they would likely cast Bae Doona as The Major. Personally I think Julie Estelle would have been great for the role, not sure if she speaks good English or not though

It seems so because of differences in storytelling. Eastern story is usually told with spiritual focus, you see lots of exposition, long shots and stills. While western style focuses primarily on raw realism. That's exactly what we see in The Departed. If Scorsese tried to copy Eastern style, it wouldn't work, so with new setting, characters and direction style we got new vision of this story. It's not bad, but it depends on personal taste.

No, Infernal Affairs' best moment is actually about the raw realism. The scene when the undercover cop sees his superior landing on the car roof was one scene that nothing in The Departed can compare in terms of the delivery of the emotion. There's no spiritual focus in that, it's the sort of stuff you see in western works as well. Hell, even the actors in The Departed were rather badly utilised. Nicholson was just being Nicholson while Matt Damon looks confused the entire movie. DiCaprio's great but that's it. Meanwhile, in The Infernal Affairs, you've got a guy who is usually known for comedic roles actually pulling off a pretty good villain, among other things.

Some character arcs and plotlines got turned into the exact opposite of what they were in the original, a bunch of characters who are hale and hearty in the books got killed off for shock value, the supernatural stuff got gutted and so on.
