Keep in mind every demon (even Natsu to an extent) had a deep longing to kill Zeref.
Then consider that Zeref is willing to 1-shot his own demons. If Larcade was really just a random strong demon he would likely have just been killed right there.

Chances are Zeref knew/knows that August is his son and pretends not to know. It's even quite possible that Larcade is a demon that August helped Zeref create.
