Shinsekai Yori. It's considered a cult hit and one of the best anime of the decade by many people here in the west, but it flopped extremely hard in nipland.

Although to be fair, very few people actually cared about Shinsekai Yori when it was airing, it only gained popularity and praise some time after.

on the other hand, was a true bomb: SSY didn't even average 1k in Japan. Though to be fair, it doesn't actually seem to be that popular in the West either, it just has a small but vocal cult following.
