She did? She acknowledged that the band sucks and it kinda did back then. She didn't hurt anyone's feelings and I don't think there is anything wrong with seeing things how they are.

To be fair, I like her aloof personality, but she obviously cares about other people who are close to her as well.. I really loved that one moment when she strongly empathized with Hazuki and her struggle to learn and teamed up with Midori to have that one little play. It was a really sweet moment and it was just for Hazuki and no one else.

This one is a little more difficult. I know people say he deserved it for calling her ugly and he sort of does, but she holds her grudge for a pretty long time. Though what I liked about this that it also demonstrates that Kumiko is pretty uncomplicated if you do piss her off. She flat out tells him why she is mad at him and there is nothing he can say against it since he did act like a dumb pussy. She doesn't make a big fuss, but nevertheless is still mad, which is alright. Also there are mutliple hints that she still cares about him, though she can't resist the banter and doing noises of disapproval.

Mai is more of a typical waifu character with your typical waifu traits, like being overly motherly, heavily sexualized, athletic, powerful and so on, but I like Kumiko for being much more grounded, but still really loveable and cute.

Did you watch the show with during the season it aired? Mai was kinda disliked, or it was 50/50. Overall Reina was more well received. This only changed after episode 11 aired.

Mai is short tempered and has a snide tongue. She is also a bit of a meathead, she moves before thinking in phantom hunting missions and this is stated to be the reason why nobody but Haruhiko wants to be on her team.

The moments Mai behaves motherly are rare, they are really sweet. She is also friendly to people who aren't close to her like Haruhiko's male friend. She also likes games, sports and movies. I find that she is much easier to connect with than Kumiko, who is kinda apathetic.

I watched up to like episode 4-5 when it aired, put it on hold and eventually finished it later.

To be honest, my impression is that Mai is a huge wish fulfillment character. The actually really kind, beautiful and sweet girl, who only opens up to few people, mostly the MC and his friends, since as you said, no one else wants her on their team. Her flaws are the 'not actual flaws' type, which end up making her more available to the MC and for some people even more charming. It's like when a female character is shy and thus only opens up to the MC, but instead of ever causing any problems because of it, it will simply make her appear cuter for those that like the cute shy girl type.

That said, I'm not here to change your opinion. While I do think that's the case, I don't think there is anything wrong with liking that kind of type.

It has nothing to do with popularity, but more with how it impacts the story. I'll give you some examples from Hibike:

Kumiko's cynical nature and her tendency to be very brash put a strain on her relationship with Reina during the flashback in the very beginning of the show. This made her initial contact with Reina very awkward and it took some time repairing it.

Ribbon's brash nature and her devotion to Kaori made her stir up some heavy drama. Then in return, Reina's proud nature and her crush on Taki made her deal with it very poorly.
Note that there is nothing wrong with Ribbon doubting Taki's judgement due to knowing Reina beforehand, nor is there anything wrong with Reina defending her position to play the solo.
However the way they dealt with it was very stupid and unnecessary. From a writing perspective I mean this in a good way. The problem they faced was caused by their very own flaws, meaning if it wasn't for their well defined personalities, this wouldn't have happened and now they have to deal with it until they find a conclusion. In this case it was solved via the duel, and later on we can see that both learned from it. Reina apologized to Kaori and Ribbon became more chill. Admittedly she later on says that she wasn't wrong, but it was obviously meant in a more playful way to tease Kumiko.

It is also well written because it is possible for us to empathize with their respective way of thinking. It's not necessarily that we would've done the same, but we can understand why someone would act that way.

I can't say I agree but if it's like that Mai has some scenes from the novels where her personality flaws create drama or problems.

In one scene she hits Haruhiko when he walks in on her changing and thinks she accidentally killed him. Haruhiko wakes up in her arms and she's actually crying worried that he died. Then she uses her powers to heal him but passes out in his arms right after because due to her nature she never finds the need to use the healing power so the energy consumption is extremely high.

In another near the end of volume one she chases after a Phantom by herself. It was personal for her since the phantom had injured her senpai from last year who is a third year now. Haruhiko gets in the way of their fight to protect her and gets injured then she blames herself for it.

Would that validate her personality flaws?

No. It's not about drama specifically, but about having an impact on the story. To make it easier to understand I will pick a more simple comedy series, like Spongebob. I doubt I need to go too much into it, but just look at Squidward and Spongebob and their respective 'flaws' and their chemistry. Basically entire episodes happen only because of their interaction with each other. They don't get carried alongside the plot, they make the plot happen. If it wasn't for their specific personality, everything would play out in a different way. This is similar to my example with Reina and Ribbons.

Yes and no. These are the kind of 'not actual flaws' type of flaws I was talking about.

The first one seems more similar to one of thoses 'walks in on tsundere girl who is changing and gets hit for it' jokes, only with her worrying and crying about it, which again only highlights how she is actually really good and kind-hearted, meaning making her more waifu-ish.

The second one is more like it, but then again it also highlights many of her good traits, like heavily caring for her friends, enough so that she even seeks out revenge for them and then again caring for Haruhiko. Furthermore I assume that nothing really bad is gonna come out of it, meaning it'll mostly be inconsequential.

A better example for stuff like this would be Evangelion and the relationship between Shinji and Asuka. Many times their actions result from their very specific flaws and are more or less just in the way. A more positive conclusion to one of their problems is the dancing episode. They initially struggle working with each other but through much effort they end up resolving the problem, but their flaws are far from fixed.

Unfortunately things get worse later on, mostly because of their flaws. Shinji is too avoidant to confront Asuka whenever she trashes him and Asuka tends to trash him because of her own problems and insecurities. They fuck up many times and grow more distant with each other because of their incompatbility.

This means their flaws have consequences. Things don't have to go to shit in order for it to be well written, but when something happens because of a flaw, then the conclusion should make things different somehow. Someone can die because of it, relationships can break, or something more positive and lighthearted, like characters changing for the better.

Admittedly, PW was much more lighthearted than for example Evangelion, so it doesn't need to go to similar extremes. And also it is much much easier for a show like Hibike to have a character arc. Take for example Kumiko's desire to improve. Simply put, she does improve and it is very noticeable that her newfound love the the Euphonium impacts every single aspect of the show from now on. She empathizes with Nozomi loving to play the flute and so on.

Now keep in mind that I'm not an expert regarding anything, so I'm really just saying what I think makes sense. Also I kind of went off-topic here and there, like when I'm talking about Evangelion or fucking Spongebob, so I'll put it to rest now. Also I'm tired and will to sleep now, so goodbye!
