Sort of. But it's an acceptable asspull compared to what you normally see in shonen series, since Gon ended up losing all of his Nen powers and basically has to sit out this arc, plus Nanika is being worked into the storyline as a major plot point for the next arc.

All too often in Shonen series when the MC is near death, they get some asspull to heal them, they're fine and keep right on going the next day as if nothing happened and the asspull itself is never really explored. This is moderately better than that.

I think Ging has to die. Gon's problem right now is that he's lost his purpose for hunting and needs to find a new one. Ging was his previous purpose, so having him still on the board seems like it would hinder Gon from moving on. Gon has also been selfish and naive, interacting with the world without any thought to consequence or perspectives outside of his own. A more mature Gon will act with with self awareness, and possibly for the sake of others.

Alluka will also have to die or leave Killua. Killua has also lost his purpose and is leaning on her as a substitute now that he's had to leave Gon. Killua is a person who needs to be needed, and in parallel to Gon he needs to live more selfishly and independently.

I don't know where that will leave those two characters in the end, but I want to think they will get a soft ending where they continue to work in whatever hunting field they've chosen for themselves, either together or separately. Maybe they will be dark continent hunters or something. Leorio will go home and open his own clinic, and maybe Kurapika will start a family after he's finished with his revenge, or his pursuit of vengeance will kill him, and the Kurta line will end with him.

This is more or less where I thought the series was going to go before CA arc happened.
I'm kind of hoping Gon gets over Ging now that he stumbled across him and spoke to him, and was hoping he'd seriously find his own personal goals for being a hunter, he seems like a driven person who wouldn't be constantly dragged around the world in reaction to other characters. But I'd accept him trying to avenge his dad more easily than Kite.

As for Alluka, if she actually had more of a character than was shown, I thought it was going to go in a bit of a darker direction. Not that she dies, but maybe after some adventures with Killua with her power sometimes going wrong/somehow ends with the deaths of some innocents, she herself would want to go back home and be locked up because she thinks she's too dangerous to be free. But all you really see of her as a character is onii-chan uguu~ and muh nanika so whatever.

This is fucking obvious. Ai is the entity of co-dependence, it just works as some sort of machine that echanges its powers for some proportional consequences. But it worked that way because it is a calamity, an object of despair, meaning it's supposed to bring displeasure to people. When Ai realized that its own self was acknowledged and loved by a creature from a different specie, its whole coordinate axis was moved. The desire of co-dependence that never found love finally found one. Ai became a human. That means the calamity aren't just sheer forces of nature born to create chaos, but just like the KA, can become good.

Netero dying emboldens his son to announce the dark continent voyage. Obviously Kakin had been planning the voyage for years but Netero's death means that nobody can really hold Beyond back. You also have Pariston leaving, Ging Leaving, Reform to the organization, etc. More hunters are killed and we find out that the organization only has 300+ members. the temp hunters and pros killed during the CA arc, as well as the ones killed during the Election arc; although not all of them were strong fighters, represents a pretty heavy loss to an organization that only loses 1 or so members a year on average.

I'm not saying that we didn't step back from some consequences. But it's not like things got reset to zero.

It was like Jotaro getting timestop at the end of Part 3. An asspull, but the author managed to do something interesting with it, and at least it was moderate (no Nen back for Gon, no instant win for Jotaro like with Giorno). It doesn't even bother me that Alluka gave Killua a wish for free, if it only can give "clean" wishes without consequences it kinda fits with HxH's general theme of human being bastards (the calamity isn't bad by itself, it's made bad because humans' greed). In a reversal of his usual cynicism, the assassin clan that studies Alluka in a cold, scientific and dehumanizing way, couldn't figure half of what Killua learnt by treating Alluka and Nanika as human beings.

I really loved the family brawl and the conflicting motivations that ran even among the servants. Even if you have a magical key to fix everything, you can create conflict making the characters disagree about how to better use it.

There's also a chance that Killua might have been hiding more rules, maybe a selfless wish implies some strict rules (Killua got a free healing because he honestly wished his friend to get better, you can't for example wish for an army to revive just to send them to fight again).

And both with Jojo and with this, if you make an effort, you can make it make sense, but it's clear the author didn't have it well thought (in Togashi's case, he left a clue with the Zoldyck kids' names, but for me he just wanted to leave open the possibility of add another Zoldyck).

The point is, maybe it was an asspull, but that doesn't make it neccessarily bad.

I actually liked the guy. Countdown was tailor made for how GI works. Little flower isn't anything to sneeze at. I believe his design is intentionally misleading because he's supposed to look like some generic team mate until he reveals his villainy, but he also doesn't have some "transformation" so he can look more intimidating. He's a master of CQC and capable of taking down hunters of his caliber.

Yes, because it was made by a kid who doesn't have the benefit of extensive combat training or a real imagination. He took Rock Paper Scissors and decided to weaponize it. His startup condition is the chant which had been pointed out as being way too unweildy. And even in his Super Saiyan form he only got a power boost, not a speed boost in terms of activation.

But Enhancement as a whole is a solid category and even if the user mixes in another category Enhancers can have the highest base defense when it comes to nen and their offense doesn't require as many stipulations to be effective. It literally is the "punch harder" power set but that's ok because like I said. Punching harder is a viable strategy.

Gon is way too straightforward and simple to really benefit from having a primary affinity for another school of Nen. If he had trained naturally I feel like he either would have shifted from Ja-janken or introduced more variations because we all know/were that one kid who threw out Bomb while playing RPS. It would have been cool if he created a gimped version of Little Flower in honor of his battle with Genthru.

I don't think Genthru needed a backstory because funny enough, GI kind of just assumes that it's not important from Gon's perspective. Like Genthru is some fleshed out villain but because all Gon was doing at the time was training by digging holes in mountains; all we got to see was the moments where Genthru was killing people.

We know he wants money, we know he's been playing GI for over 5 years, and we know he's ruthless. That's all thats really relevant to his character. Hell even when Hisoka first showed up we knew nothing except he was a creepy clown who was clearly better than everyone else in the exam.

Nanika was literally the only ass pull in the series.

The recent stuff with Hisoka, and Gon's power up vs Pitou were almost asspulls. I mean they explain the mechanisms for that stuff to happen like once, but they don't go into too much detail like they do with all the other powers/abilities. So they're still explained, could just be done a bit better.

But Nanika really is the only asspull.
