Think about how depressing his life would have been if his uncle hadn't shown up. He'd have spent 40+ years hanging out in arcades and playing old Nintendo games and talking to people about how neat those old Nintendo games are. That's a totally innocuous (and miserable) person, all-around. If you saw someone like that, you'd feel *bad* for them.
