It's a shame because it's legitimately a phenominal series and it's got a tight focus. I don't imagine it going on for more than maybe 5-6 more volumes which is fine by me because I prefer manga where the Author knows where they want to go and get there.

I also like the subtle horror of these kids developing a neural network that can possibly force an emotionless hive mind over them. The idea that their evolution is moving them all further away from humanity and into a more birdman-centric mindset is really offputting.

It's a possibility of evolution. The original colony of Birdmen stopped talking outright and only spoke through tweets in the end before Eden wiped them. You can see this same shift happen to the main cast as they all start to awaken their roles. It's worth a re-read to watch when people start shifting perspectives.

As for whether or not it's a given outcome that birdmen will have to give up there humanity, that's something I think the MC is grappling with. The original birdmen and Arthur's group moved in a direction that put birdmen seperate from humans, but I don't know if the current groups goal is integration into human society or cohabitation. Their evolution isn't the same as the other groups so whether or not they completely shirk their humanity is to be determined.

I like this series for several reasons
the MC is actually smart
romance isn't overtaking the plot

the struggle of the MC's losing their humanity/connection to humans
I also think it's interesting that there are other kinds of ab-normal humans and how they react to suddenly becoming second fiddle as soon as EDEN had a new favourite toy

Fox did say he was nearing the end of his lifespan which is why he got off the hook
to Eden the Birdmen and all those others are clearly nothing more than tools, they only care about keeping them in working condition

I think she's actually very good with her panel usage for dialogue / ambient scenes, and the dialogue is the character interest itself - she's not trying to focus on action much, so the static-ness really isn't an issue for me. It seems like you just want a different kind of manga altogether, honestly. I'll give you that she relies on the high-contrast stuff a lot, but personally it works.

And I wouldn't say that, Murakami does what she sets out to do but much better. She tries to make character driven narratives but a lot of the times the characters are very flat.

Gen's replacement in kekkaishi is a good example along with the MCs mother. They have interesting concepts, but end up falling flat thematically.

Paneling isn't all about dynamic page composition, though. She shifts the view around and uses appropriate shots for the mood and flow of the conversation. It adds to the scene, unlike plenty of mangaka where I think you could honestly condense a lot of their conversations' text into one or two panels without losing much.

Continuing, who do you mean by Gen's replacement? Sen, or the Sousui's spy dude? The former worked pretty well, he just wasn't that important. I'll give you that the latter didn't work out that well. I thought the only issue with MC's mom was that she got a little shafted by the ending, which felt like it came a bit prematurely for most of the character arcs.

Oh, that makes more sense. I wouldn't say he's particularly better or worse, though, at least not in comparison to this so far (Kekkaishi had its ups and downs, but so do some of his works, e.g. Sengoku Youko). He's certainly more sort of energetic/spirited in his storytelling, though, if that makes sense, which I could understand as a personal preference.

Tanabe has consistently used paneling, perspective, and shading to emphasize her stories. It got more prominent the longer Kekkaishi ran and her one shot Laughter at the End of the Earth was when I really noticed it before Birdmen.

And it's not just the Dramatic shading that she does, I find her jokes work very well too because of the paneling.
