Anime was boring shit and one of worst PA Works shows.

Aside from that, Tanuki are evil pest and should be exterminated completely without any regrets as any competent Exorcist would tell you. As far yokai goes, only worse than Tanuki are kitsune and bakenekos - but while they are actually powerful and dangerous, Tanukis are just inheritely evil irredeemable pests that cant coesits with other as its in their nature to do evil.

It's not a case that Uchouten is their best and has core staff that doesn't belong to PA.

The natural order excuse is also hypocritical since the Friday Fellows only do it as a status symbol and for tradition and not out of real necessity. The professor even says "Who even eats tanuki in this day and age?".
Even if tanuki dad accepts his fate with dignity and the tanukis are generally against aggression, it's pretty clear to me that the show depicts the whole situation in a bad light, with the only sympathetic human character deciding against it.

You got me there, anon. I sort of feel what they were going for but I cannot wrap my head around why everyone was so enamored with Benten and why she's accepted as friend of the family rather than just tolerated for helping out at the end. The show's strength is displaying how the family deals with loss in complex ways, people being complex in general is a big part of the show, but the treatment of Benten is so emotionally alien that it ruins the whole ride for me.

The main character of season 1 is emotionally distant from everyone but one man whom he never shares any physical intimacy with, and that man is constantly banging whores. The main character of season 2 is a dedicated family man.
