The current top scanners are
Epson Perfection V550
Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark II

Try using the TWAIN drivers and scanning directly into Photoshop alternatively you can use IrfanView.

Scan lines are a defect with the scanner head itself, not the TWAIN.

Shit like this >>153879652 and this >>153880970 is why I post >>153881595
>>
>>153881647
It's helpful for the beginners, what's the problem here?
>>
>>153881783
If you put that every thread it ends up being a general, which are frowned upon for a good reason, as they end up being circlejerks with nothing to do with the original topic.
They go full cancer when they start counting threads and have "editions".

And to top it off, all that info can be found with a basic search, unless they are chronic retards.
>>
>>153882042
>Muh general
Clearly, you're retarded
>>
>>153882042
Threads become generals when they stay up all the time. This might not be a general but you're deluded if you think it isn't a circlejerk.
>>
>>153875915
I always wondered how do you take a tankobon apart in order to scan all the pages. I mean I guess pages are most likely glued with something right? How do you preserve the integrity of the outside taking the page from the tankobon? Let's say I want to scan both of them, the outside and the inside of the manga, what people normally do?
>>
>>153883054
What you want to google is "debinding manga".
Granted I've never done it myself so I can't recommend any particulars
>>
>>153883054
Just apply heat to the spine to melt the glue enough to pull the pages out gently. It doesn't normally damage the outside unless you're really reckless. I use a hairdryer for debinding. You don't even need an expensive one.
>>
>>153883095
mmh mmh thanks for pointing me in the right direction, let's see what I can find. I'll post the result here just in case someone is wondering that too
>>
>>153883054
some people use a hair dryer to melt the glue on the binding
>>
>>153882710
How is this a circlejerk? The only time this has come close to it was when people started shitposting, but then again, that's shitposting for you. Take a look at this thread. People are asking stuff, other anons are replying and being generally helpful to each other.
>>
>>153883166
It kind of turns into a circlejerk if someone tries to keep it up past its natural lifespan
That one fucking tripfag mostly
>>
>>153883286
>one person bumping the thread to keep it alive makes it a circlejerk
Either you're retarded or I don't know what a circlejerk is.
>>
>>153883166
It becomes a circlejerk when you have the same people in every thread, which is pretty much what happens here. Surely there's new users but most are regulars.
>>
>>153883393
Yeah I guess it's not so much a circlejerk as that one guy jerking himself off. but still.
>>
>>153883123
here it is, a good video tutorial explaining the process in a simple way https://youtu.be/BP-wRBfObqc
>>
Actually, on the topic of debinding manga, what do people do with the pages after they've been debinded and scanned?

Do you attempt to rebind them or something? Or just kinda file them away in a stack?
>>
>>153873527
I had an Epson V600 for a while and it was choice
>>
>>153883554
They get filed away in a stack, in case they need to be rescanned for whatever reason.
I buy 2 of everything.
>>
>>153883554
If you have a press it's possible to sort of rebind them, or at least to compress them back to an almost close enough height again. Normally I just wrap an elastic band around them though.
>>
>>153883160
That's of the worst possible ways to do it. Not only does it take a drastically long time, it warps and wrinkles the pages.

What you want is an iron or hot plate. Then you just put a piece of cloth between the surface of the iron and the spine of the manga. Run the iron over the spin of the manga for a few seconds and the pages should peel right out.
>>
>>153883527
Do not follow this video, it's not actually good in the slightest. Doing it with a hair dryer will damage the pages because you can not control exactly where you are heating up.

Do this >>153883719 it much faster and more effective.
>>
>>153883719
>That's of the worst possible ways to do it.
I learned this the hard way. It smeared the glue all over my glossy color pages.
>>
>>153883554
I don't bother because I'm a lazy ass, but it can be rebound (with a little loss on the page size). I had a place near me that offered a night class in bookbinding. It's surprising how much to the course there is but if you're interested, have the time, and can afford it, I genuinely recommend it.

>>
>>153884555
Sure, half a hair straightener would work the same way as an iron.
>>
>>153884754
most scanners don't live in japan. you just order online.
>>
>>153884237
If you just use the hairdryer as a heat source and only heat the spine, is it really going to fuck shit up, other than being slower though?
>>
>>153885241
I guess ordering your own manga and making your own RAW scans keep your quality at a higher level but what's the point if I can I have to wait weeks for the shipment when someone in Japan can host RAWs somewhere on internet one or two days after the release?
>>
>>153885406
Because some people want to scanlate things that aren't (publicly) available on the internet.
>>
>>153885406
Because japs don't host RAWS one or two days after release mostly? Most pubraws are shitty anyway, artificating anywhere, and not even properly levelled.
>>
>>153885378
You can't only heat up the spine with a hair dyer.
It blows hot air out in a frontal cone that is much wider than the spine oh a book. So heat is, without fail, going to warp the pages.
>>
>>153885529
it's not gonna touch the pages if you only blow it on the outside though. You might warp the cover, but you can scan that before debinding.
>>
any update on a working ebj ripper script?
>>
>>153885467
>>153885473
I think I misjudged Japanese people. I thought they were automatically uploading their stuff online because we in the West are addicted to anime and manga. Good point. I'm wondering now how much should I wait for a packaged from Japan to Europe but all of this may be too expensive for a scanlation team that mostly work free for users..
>>
>>153885529

Nope, paper raws are where its at
>>
>>153885790
I mean, ideally digital master copies are what you want. But that'll never happen.
>>
>>153885646
All I can recommend for that is order in bulk where possible. Tanks aren't actually that exensive mostly, so generally you're just paying for postage. Obviously if the costs all fall to you, it's on you, but I've personally paid for more than a few tanks I've worked on and it hasn't stopped me from being able to live. If you're really scrimping by paycheck to paycheck you might struggle though.
>>
>>153885790
Shit looks fine, stop exaggerating. The large majority of your readers couldn't care less about the barely noticeable difference in quality anyway. It only really matters to (You).

>>
>>153885760
Sure, but if you stop convection, there's no more heat reaching the pages than any other method. I just don't see why it's significantly awful compared to any other method of melting the glue.
>>
Anyone have that Chinese tool updated? I want to pick it up a series from jump+

I can understand your opinion if most ebooks were 1600px (most new ones are nowadays, fortunately, they're getting better), I could understand. But 80% of ebooks are still >1200px.

I wonder what a Japanese reader (excluding cellphone-only readers) would think if he saw that Comixology releases 3000px. Do you think they reverse import?
>>
>>153885963

He right though. Most manga aggregator readers don't give a shit about quality

ITT: people who have never done any debinding.

I use an iron, but I know the Kakushigoto scanner uses a dryer and somehow has managed to avoid the horror of page warp.

Or did you mean there is a critical temperature at which the tankoubon will collapse into a micro black hole and spew its pages into another universe? I don't think the average hair dryer can deliver that kind of heat.
>>
>>153885963
Don't pretend like it isn't true, you know most people don't care. They wouldn't even notice the difference if you switched from your own digital raws to your own scans.

Ok, master debinder, show us a picture of such a "warped page" from heating dry paper. I agree, I am too stupid to conceive of a physical process that would distort the dimensions of a piece of paper while heating it short of actually singeing it. Enlighten us all.

The best is always scanning and cleaning yourself. No question. The vast majority of scanlation cleaners are going to give you a better raw than the official digital raws (sadly). The question you should be asking is "are the digital raws good enough for my purpose". If they are, by all means use the digital raws and clean them for the convenience. On that front it's case by case though. Most publishers and stores won't sell you a copy that's a good res and is particularly well done.

>distort the dimensions of a piece of paper
You do realize this is not about changing the physical size of the paper, right?
Okay, let me give you an example you can test yourself.

Take a sheet of lined loose leaf paper and hold it between you two hands, palm to palm. Hold it for a minute or so and the heat/moisture from your hands will warp the paper and make it have ripples in it. Sort of like this image.

Now, because the paper is rippled when you scan it the lines on the page that were once straight will now reflect the ripples and not be perfectly straight.

>>
>>153888282
Yes, this is a pretty popular solution.
Another alternative is to typeset the English in the same style, next to the Japanese without redrawing that, but that can get really messy, fast.
>>
>>153888059
Check the archive a thread or two back, you might find something.
>>
>>153888117
It takes a few minutes of heating and separating for an entire book and no, there are no flaws. But obviously you're more interested in your narrative rather than being reasonable.
>>
>>153888482
It takes literal seconds with an iron.
And no, there are flaws, you're just too stupid to see them. If the glue is getting hot enough to melt, that means there has to have been a good amount of heat on it. And the only way a hair dryer can apply heat is in a large spread, mean the pages must have been touched by it, thus warped.

And being reasonable about what? You trying to give bad information?
>>
years ago I watched this tutorial showing me how to make godlike cleanings with Photoshop's Topax plugins but I don't remember what video anymore :/ btw you should try the DeNoise and Clean plugins! https://www.topazlabs.com/store
>>
>>153888647
>It takes literal seconds with an iron.
Sounds exaggerated. Separating pages alone takes a bit of time.
>And no, there are flaws
Nope. Not a single one. The glue is melted enough to pop the pages out and the pages are pristine.

Fact is, you're spreading misinformation that has already been challenged by two people. You're full of shit and it stinks.
>>
>>153889097
Nah, it was just you. And the post you are replying to explains how you are wrong. It is physically not possible to melt the new with a hair dryer and not effect other things.

The amount of heat required to melt clue is more than what paper can withstand without warping.
Hair dryers can not apply heat in a specific spot due to how they work as a whole.

Just because you apply heat "slowly" or whatever you think, that means doesn't change the net amount of total heat that is required to melt the glue. Heating it up more slowly doesn't change how the same amount of heat is still there.

This was said in the post you are replying to, but I guess you need things explained more simply for you.
>>
>>153888482
>there are no flaws
>>153889097
>Not a single one.

>>
>>153889605
>if I use the word muh and say "pathetic" in my post that means I win!
No, it doesn't. And you actually proved I right as a matter of fact by posting that screen shot.

The fact you will not address anything else other than how you were caught being stupid also is very telling.
>>
>>153886993
Original stupid guy here - you apparently missed the part about the DRY PAPER. Yes, your hand example will wrinkle the paper BECAUSE YOU'RE INTRODUCING MOISTURE. Now I'm a pretty stupid guy, but as the name hair DRYER suggests, it doesn't spray water onto the tank while you are heating it.

I don't know why you keep trying to justify your stupid argument which all started because you used the word "warped" instead of "wrinkled" which makes slightly more sense in that it would have demonstrated how retarded your argument was immediately.

As I said originally, I use an iron, not a hair dryer myself, but because I find direct heat easier to control, not because I'm afraid it will wrinkle the paper. Maybe if you have some super expensive tank that is printed on actual clay-coat stock you could damage the pages with general heating, but that's not 95% of Jap comic books.
>>
>>153891869
>waiting until the thread is about to be archived to bump it with sheer retardation
Nice.

And you clearly so fucking stupid you don't realize there is moisture inherently in the air, and heating it up will cause it to damage paper. Even more so when you are blowing that heated moisture at the speed a hair drying functions.

Also, wrinkled and warped mean the same thing.

And next time, use sage so your shit thread died like it's suppose to.

This is what killed the ebj script. It undefines the functions needed for the greasemonkey script to pull the image data from the canvases, so any attempt to do so just fails.

I have no idea if there's a way around it in the limited scope of a greasemonkey script.

>>153902015
there is a guy here explaining why you should not use PNG and instead using TIFF when making scans https://www.scanyourentirelife.com/tiff-vs-png-file-format-hurt-save-scanned-photos/

>one of the biggest reasons not to use the PNG format for photo scanning – and more importantly archiving photos – is because it's a form of compression. It's a form of compression called “lossless,” which as you might already know, means that your photo will be saved without having any of the data (details) of your photo “tossed out.” However, the image is still undergoing a very complex process using a mathematical algorithm to compress the file so that it will take up less space on your hard drive.
>>
>>153901945
What do you mean? Just save the colored page as a PNG-24 or as a JPG with no compression.
I'm confused what you are trying to ask.
>>
>>153902189

>png is lossless
>still end up with jpg manga scans with visible artifacting
>>
>>153902253
Yes.
>>
>>153902253
Because PNG-8 is for restricted color depths. A black and white page will almost never go over 32 bit color depth, so everything else after 32 is bloat in the file size.
>>
>>153902149
That guy is dumb and is saying you should store uncompressed. Having image undergo "complex process" using math isn't an issue and your computer is already doing that all the time, e.g. RLL(1,7).
For photographs there could be issues where information from sensor isn't kept by png so you want raw but that's not fault of compression but format. For manga scans png should be fine.

>>
>>153909185
no, that's a wizard, what you really want is a full offline installer. this is the correct page for the latest Adobe programs https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/creative-cloud-apps-download.html

1. login with your AdobeID and download the program
2. once you have download the program, disable your internet
3. install the program you downloaded
4. do not start the program yet or if it opens automatically just close it
5. launch amt emu, select your program and find the installation directory of said program in order to patch the amtlib file. you generally find it in /program_name/support files
6. once you successfully patched the amtlib you can close amtemu, reconnect internet and start your program

>>153909425
They are shit at it. Care yo show me an example?
>>
>>153909472
Thank you, anon.
>>
>>153909539
one more thing, it may not be the latest program version so if you want to update the program just open creative cloud, download and install the update. once everything is done it should overwrite the original amtlib file so you'll have to patch it again with amtemu. don't worry if you see trial expired after the update installation, you just need to repatch again the amtlib file as I said

Can't basic cleaning/cropping/leveling be automated thanks to neural networks? I'm pretty sure you could teach a network to detect and clean bubbles and crop scanned pages to the right ratio these days.
>>
>>153910881
Oh, you meant centering the text in the bubble.
>>
>>153910632
We simply need a lot of people reading comics to make it socially acceptable, you know, the majority rule. Don't let the normies win, become the normie through the path of cultural victory.
>>
>>153910946
Yes.
Google can also do things like detect and extract speech bubble shapes from comics. OCR is good too.
The biggest hurdle is probably the actual translation portion but I think they'll be big strides in JP->EN in 13 years, even if it's not totally automated you could have most of it automated to point where anybody could just let it run then sanity check translation and typesetting etc.
>>
>>153910946
Maybe some of the basic stuff, but cleaning often involves redrawing because of the tendency of mangaka to place significant text outside of the bubbles. Making it look asthetically, "right" is not a trivial task.
>>
>>153910881
>>153910997
What's wrong with the centering?

What's /a/'s opinion on ellipsis?
In response to some tards saying official english releases are essentially word of god, I've been seeing a lot of:
>"...dialog..."
>"... (linebreak) dialog"
>"dialog (linebreak) ..."

I tend to get rid of leading elllipsis myself since those tend to be handled by the fact that multiple narration-boxes are segmenting the dialog well enough already.

Keeping ellipsis attached to the word instead of splitting to a second line is good practice? Or no? As in:
>"dialog..."
maybe
>"...dialog"
but not
>"... (linebreak) dialog" or "dialog (linebreak) ..."
>>
>>153912055
I don't really give a shit... I try to keep ellipses on the same line as the text and try to format them as you would in English, but I put them on their own line when you can't fit them in the bubble.

... So I
was raped
by Jamal...

Leaving it as "...So I" is retarded since you need a space after an ellipse.
>>
>>153912055
I typeset sentences as:
>"This is a... / text."
unless the sentence continues onto the next page, in which case I simply begin the next page like this:
>" / ... text."

Only madmen see the total absence of ellipses as not being stilted as fuck, so I tend to ignore anyone who tries to argue for that pattern. Otherwise, I'm open to suggestions/criticisms.
>>
>>153910563

I am struggling with two bubbles that are related to each other (but from different chapters).

The first bubble is on this page:
https://e-hentai.org/s/8d892dc6d8/740849-4

Here is how I interpret it:
>I should not have gone on this business trip…
>My boss said it would be fun but that was bullshit…

>自然がいっぱいっていうか
>自然しかねーし
>泊まる宿は温泉で混浴だけど
>こんな辺鄙な所に若い女が
>来るわけねーだろ!
>って言う話だし
(This is the line I don't understand)

>The food was flavorless and boring
>And on top of all that I have to work hard…

>But despite all that, I went for the one in a million chance of it happening.
Then he says he is the only guest and his dreams are crushed...

The same thing about his manager comes up in the next chapter too.
https://e-hentai.org/s/a190bc3125/786591-22
>幽霊や妖怪でも
>もう一度会いたくて
>課長に無理言って
>出張してきたんだ!

He goes back to the inn because he just needed to meet the girl again, even if she was a ghost or whatever. But I don't understand the part about his manager.
Can anyone explain what he says about his manager both in the first and second chapter?
>>
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/tctmc4k0f9knq/Mitsuhashi_Otoya

I scanned an old anthology by Garo artist, Mitsuhashi Otoya.
>>
>>153902936
Hush Hush, Victory Speech, Mild Mannered, Joe Kubert, Totally Awesome, Kiss and Tell, Astro City is also good but I prefer it as a narration font.
>>
>>153917265
In the second chapter, is he saying:
>I did not care if you were a ghost or demon, I just had to meet you again! My boss said I could not take another business trip until now!
But that sounds weird because it's only been a week...
>>
some properly pick otome sensou
it's still machine translated shit right??
>>
>>153917265
What part of the first chapter are you having trouble with?
All of the quoted japanese text there (that doesn't actually reference his manager)?

In the second chapter, he basically says he wanted to see her so badly that he pestered his boss to let him make another business trip (無理を言う is like "ask the impossible of")
>>
>>153910922
Yeah I know. the resolutions aren't that great, but it's what's readily available. I was working on chichi chichi from it. Bought both volumes. Given the chapter length likely to catch up with the volumes. Kemmokko Zoo also looked pretty interesting. If you wouldn't mind posting the raws somewhere it'd be awesome.
>>
>>153917688
>>What part of the first chapter are you having trouble with?
>All of the quoted japanese text there (that doesn't actually reference his manager)?
Yes that's the part I am struggling with, and I would like some confirmation if I understand the bubbles before and after as well (about how the food was bland and so on).

Wait, he is not referring to his manager in that text? Now I am even more confused.

>>153917688
>In the second chapter, he basically says he wanted to see her so badly that he pestered his boss to let him make another business trip (無理を言う is like "ask the impossible of")
Thanks that makes sense. I was reading that as the manager said it was impossible.
>>
>>153917265
He's saying the place is full of nature, but there's nothing but nature around. And the lodge/inn he'll stay at (where he is now) has mixed hot baths, but because the place is so far in the boonies, there's no way young girls are ever going there.
And I guess って言う話だし indicates that the text was a conversation that took place, with his boss?
>>
>>153916413
Thanks. If you can, let me know if you feel up to it or not.
>>
>>153917871
>Wait, he is not referring to his manager in that text?
Sorry, I didn't express myself clearly. The quoted block by itself never explicitly referenced the manager, so I wasn't sure if you meant a different bubble.

>自然がいっぱいっていうか
>自然しかねーし
>泊まる宿は温泉で混浴だけど
>こんな辺鄙な所に若い女が
>来るわけねーだろ!
"Oh, it's so natural!", he said.
More like, there's nothing BUT nature here.
There's a mixed bath here at the inn,
but no young girls would ever come to a place like this!

>って言う話だし
This is kinda just him talking to himself.
It's hard to explain if you don't get it, but it's just sort of a "and that's how I ended up here" sort of thing, talking to himself and narrating his experience.
>>
>>153917493
>totally awesome
Thank you, anon. I was looking for a curvy font like that.
>>
>>153918126
Ohhh now I get it.
I didn't understand that "自然しかねーし" was like "nothing but nature!".

I didn't understand that the last part was him talking to himself. I thought it meant that it was some conversation he had with his manager before.

Thanks both of you (if you are two separate people). That helped me out a lot.

Are the other parts accurate? That he complains about the food being bland and him having to work hard and such?
That he just went on the business trip just because he had a slim chance of meeting a girl at the mixed hot spring?
>>
>>153918720
In the middle of complaining about the bland food and the hard work, he mentions that there aren't even any convenience stores around, which you seem to have missed.

You can get them for like 60 cents each if you're willing to abuse rakuten coupons. They don't seem to give a fuck about reusing the same CC on multiple accounts from what I've tried.
>>

Fuck, really? You mean those 450 yen coupons? I wanted to try spamming them but was afraid I'd get banned eventually.

How do you go about that? They're 99yen on amazon which is the only thing I know how to rip from. There's actually quite a few series I didn't know were in that mag apparently. They did 550 yen for a few months, then lowered it to 450. No idea what their cycle is, I've only started looking at this stuff since kadokawa fucked up most of everything on comic-walker. I think this coupon might have been their 15th anniversary or something though, so it may not come back.

>>153922783
I actually didn't notice they were 99 yen on Amazon, that's really odd. Rakuten is a modded Kobo interface, so you can use Obok DeDRM and Calibre on the stuff you buy from it. Then just grab the images from the unencrypted ebook it gives you.
Only place that's hard to rip from right now is BookWalker but from what I've seen they offer the exact same quality as all the other sources now.

Take the dust off those grammar books and start learning your tenses because that's where most people fuck up. Knowing the difference between "she had" and "she has had" is pretty important and a lot of natives either get it wrong or simply don't care about it.
