Michiko and Hatchin took place in some pseudo post apocalyptic Brazil and a major theme of Fujiko Mine is facades and illusions and the visuals backed that to the extreme. YOI is about a guy who learns to be more confident in himself through skating and in love.

Also YOI didn't have the budget that Michiko and Hatchin and Fujiko Mine had anyway. I hope if we get a season 2, we'll get more skating scenes similar to Victor's Stay By My Side though.

Being too 'creative' with directing is a bit counter productive and distracting in a romcom like YOI. You could see her style in Georgi and Guang Hong's stories during their skate, but the rest of the story is too grounded and simple to really need anything more.
