It's a low budget promotional anime for a phone game that went out buisness before the first episode aired. They already had the money for the production, and the staff and initial planning and scripting stuff done, so the studio just continued the project. It's fascinating to me that the show continues to balance the elements of genuinely intriguing mystery yet comfy simplicity rather well still. That takes some real skill and care I think.

At this point, the post-apocalyptic scenario is complete. There's no more mystery or question about that. We know humans used to be around but aren't. We know the friends used to be animals but are now animal people. We know stardust does some shit but what we're not sure. Most of the big mysteries are now obvious. Where we go from here is a big question. Because without a lot of the mystery we've enjoyed, the show kind of loses a big part of its appeal.

The simple meaning behind this episode was that what makes humans human is the ability to use and make tools.

The owls, the owners of the human knowledge, were able to build some sort of wall. Compare this to Beaver-dono being unable to build her house. Here the implication being that the more you know, the closer you are to being a human. At this point it's obvious that Bag-chan is the only one who could reach the owls through the right path. The owls are also the only Friends that stopped eating only for the sake of living, and want to enjoy food, a human trait. And what was the thing the Owls didn't want to hand out for free? fire, THE human invention by definition.
The owls aren't as good as the human though, because all they have is the book knowledge, and lack the human heart. Recall how Beaver, "the brain", needed Kaban, "the soul", and Prairie Dog, "the body".
Remember than in this anime, "human" actually stands for the pure and perfect human soul.

Meanwhile Serval had the role of the Flintstones animals, ie organic knife. The new Eden, built when man replaced god, is thus based on technology but not the masculine, industrial, technology, but a feminine, feminist and ironic (the cooking tool is a woman, get it?) organic and biological technology, completely in contrast with the anarcho-primitivism idea.


Another interesting point is how birds have consistently being the most talented: Toki is the only one who can sing, Shoebill knew about humans, and Owls were owls.
The exception is the autistic fat snake, but that's because she was not a real animal.

It isn't really a huge part of the appeal for most viewers rather an additional thing to be interested in. Besides that there is plenty of mystery left. Another way to look at it is that compassion and altruism are what make us human. It's not a purely human trait, but it's a major theme of the show. Kaban goes out of her way to help others even when it doesn't benefit her at all, and the humanizing of animals into Friends instills this as a major personality trait.
