The SBRverse really does feel like a darker and more chaotic timeline.
Even if Dio is no longer around, Jonathan never existed either. The two main forces in the series (Dio's evil influence and the Joestar golden spirit) are completely gone.
It sort of feels like Marvel's Ultimate timeline where the stories and characters take darker and more realistic turns and morals are grayer, compared to the other universe.

I just like watching Araki challenge himself and still come out the other end ok and published. He was definitely better at drawing fully clothed characters like in part 1 (most of the time) and then chose to draw the Pillar Men and Joseph in his scant outfits, probably in order to force himself to improve. There's a lot more good than bad in all parts

Honestly, most anime nowadays looks like trash unless it's handled by a meme studio.

Watching anime these days, especially adaptations, isn't a matter of how good it is, but of how bad it isn't.

I never had high expectations for the Jojo anime and it sorta fit the ones I had. It's mediocre most of the time with some notable highs, and downright bad at certain points but it's not the worst around.

Manga has always proved to be the superior medium for me unless it's original anime, in which studios always put a lot more love and dedication than they do on cash-in adaptations of existing work.

But for how much he seemed to like muscled characters I don't think Araki has ever been too great at actually drawing muscles until maybe Part 3. Most of the characters just looked like over inflated balloons.

People give the human swastika shit but as silly as that panel looked you do get one thing out of it: that Jonathan is absolutely fucking livid at Dio and that he's punching him so hard even his body looks distorted. The anime doesn't capture much of that emotion.

And yeah, on the topic of it, while I think the Phantom Blood adaptation was overall good, I really disliked that they removed shit from Jonathan and Dio's childhood so they could fit it all into one episode.
Stuff like Jonathan being a bratty little shit who threw rocks at Danny and smoked pipes and tied frogs by their legs around. Dio and George actually having conversations which reveal how their relationship was like. Jonathan's little chocolate rampage, or Dio playing with firecrackers. Stuff that gives the two of them more character and a more clear character arc.
I know that's the stuff people think is boring but there are important things in those chapters that the anime cut out.

I thought it was weird that the anime didn't show this scene as well as the scene where Dio steals Jonathan's watch, a scene that for some reason is surprisingly popular to the extend that it was kept in the movie and there were theories made about how this was what led to the creation of The World (I think it's a Japanese thing).
I actually do think the anime's prolog of showing the George/Dario scene and the montage of Jonathan and Dio's childhoods was great but it does feel weird that they simply did not adapt the very first scene in Jojo. I feel like they should have spread these things across two episodes.

Unlikely. I don't think the OVA was taken into consideration at all when they made the anime.
I feel like they just deemed it unnecessary. I can sort of get why. It's a scene that gives away immediately what the Stone Mask does and it already establishes that there are vampires in the story because of the mask, even though vampires don't appear until Jojo and Dio are already adults. They probably cut it in order to focus more on the Victorian drama and let the vampire stuff come off more as a surprise.
And it worked because people who were watching Jojo didn't really know what the mask did, so it came off more as a surprise.
Really, I think it was for the better.
But I still wish they had adapted it because, fitting or not, it is the very first moment that happens in Jojo. It's the series's history.

Honestly I thought the chess scene was a good addition. It works well to establish that Dio is intelligent, is working for a living, is living in very poor conditions and is constantly being looked down on and hates it. It fits the character and it also contrasts him more with Jonathan's rich life. And I think any sympathy he could have goes out the window once he kicks Danny.
But I agree that there are moments in the anime where it feels like they got some things backwards and tried to make Dio more sympathetic.

I can't post the pic right now but there is this moment where Dio and Jonathan are being schooled by George and he punishes Jonathan for being lazy. In the manga, we see Dio wearing a formal suit and being perfectly prepared, while Jonathan shows up in overalls and it's made clear he hadn't studied at all. It's important to establish Dio as a creepy outsider and Jonathan as a irresponsible but relatable character.
The anime got this completely backwards by giving Dio overalls and by giving Jonathan formal wear and not really showing why Jonathan was getting punished, almost as if reversing the effect.

I feel like they wanted to capitalize on Dio's popularity and didn't care too much about adding the scenes focused on Jonathan and his childhood

Dio was a back-alley fighter. The point was to give the story a reason to be a battle manga, and both Jonathan and Dio had their backgrounds in fighting, even if it was just fist-brawls.

Of course. Araki established Dio's background well enough in the manga. The anime's scene wasn't necessary. Although I think it helps to more or less clarify that Dio wasn't just crazy and why he had his mentality. But I agree that it almost makes him too sympathetic.

And it's natural that they focused on Dio's stuff so much they should have given Jonathan equal focus and kept the scenes he had. It was his story. Phantom Blood is not Dio's backstory, it's the story of Jonathan and Dio and theie youths

Well, he's probably the most generic JoJo aside from Jonathan, but he's more modern. There's nothing wrong with that, but it makes him much easier to market than a Joseph, who is too much of an eccentric goof, or a Josuke, who is too quirky. Jotaro is has the advantage of both the mainstream appeal of a late 80's/early 90's badass and being the one character in the series who introduced the concept of Stands.

It's all just an amalgamation of benefiting factors that made him more popular than the rest.

He was the right character at the right time, basically.
He was part of a wave of cool delinquent characters that was very popular at the time, and he carved out a nice spot for himself because of his stoic cowboy attitude and his visual style.
While Jonathan was a tragic and pure classic archetype, and Joseph was a typical SJ hero, Jotaro was fresh and cool in a way that other characters weren't at the time.
And Stardust Crusaders was (and is) extremely popular (mostly because of him).
Basically, Jotaro had the kind of star power that no other Jojo before or after ever really had.
