I liked it but they skipped Baddass Shorty Alien and I think that's easily the best of the early missions. I had a hard time with that.

Overall it was decent, the animation was top notch while the story and character was nowhere near as good.

For Osaka it had the few rapes then the whole giant woman nurari, but the movie made it much more creepy than the manga. It is laughable that the Tokyo members who actually did better were relegated to cameos at the end, some like the Nerd had his one achievement robbed and transfered to Katou.

Is the manga any good? I've only watched the anime and I only enjoyed that in a "It's so bad it's good" type of way. It was a really fun watch. But the actual concept is really interesting to me, so might look to get into the manga.

The psychics were kinda useless at Osaka, only muscle rider did a lot. The whole team hardly did anything in the manga, it's even more clear when you compare to how they all fought well in the previous oni mission. Osaka mission was more about the Osaka team, Katou and based muscle rider.

And you can't deny Reika was the most useful of the last remaining gantzers, it was pretty great how she just kept shooting at Nurari without stopping even though her suit was off and she was falling to her death. Nishi coming back and replacing Vampire dude was cool too.

I had no problem with the ending of Gantz, and I loved the psychics and vampires when they first appeared. The became weak plot points 3/4th thru, but still. Fun a decade ago when you couldn't predict anything.

But I'm fine with them being cut from the movie. They're just too "unbelievable" in the sense that they'd then be handling too many genres at once - horror (vamps), SF (aliens) and SF (ESP). Muscle Rider should have stayed though. That part's a shame.

The Osaka arc is stupidly popular here in Japan, and I suppose they were creating some distance from the old (unsuccessful) movies by not having them be too similar).

Anyone else thought the dub was bad? That girl sounded horrible.

This was a lot better than I expected. Its a shame that Muscle Rider isn't there, but at least the action was really well done.

As a standalone movie it was pretty exceptional. True, if you're solely grading a movie based on its faithfulness to the source material its lacking as fuck, but who the hell does that? It was a damn solid action flick.

I agree though, it would have been better if it was a fully standalone thing, but I dont think you can just do that right out of the gate with a fresh CGI movie based on a relatively old series.

It felt random af before the Osaka mission ("phase2"), eith dinos, vampires, Kuruno's brother..
Osaka arc was painful bc there still had to wait weeks for a new chapter.

There were plenty legendary arc, like the one right after Buddha. Kuruno was angry bc he was the only survivor, so shooted on the gantzman a couple of times after it counted the points. Next time to learn him a lesson he was sent to the Chiby mission all alone.
But there were also other great ones:

Reveals like that should have been done little by little, until the Oni arc Kurono was discovering the secrets behing the black sphere in a way that made it interesting because at the same time the missions were still a big deal back then and there was tension.

When the writer just throws every single thing that made the plot mysterious in a short amount of chapters then it stops being interesting. But at the same time, the manga was about to end so i guess we could say this was rushed.
