I would be fine with this show if there were any characterization at all.

Every character in this show just mopes around with a blank expression, until they start crying, or making out with somebody (while crying). They're all nonexistent characters. It's so fucking bland and boring. Why would I be invested in any of them?

As for the nature of their relationships, and being some kind of realistic, first I don't care about that, and second it still misses the mark. Instead of being some kind of authentic portrayal of human relationships, it's in this weird uncanny valley where it awkwardly apes those relationships without getting anywhere close to the reality making all the characters feel like uncomfortable psychopaths.

Also I'll be the one to say it, the thing where it has quote text panels mirroring a character's dialog as they're saying it because it's like super important or something is PRETENTIOUS. I understand the director is desperate for anything to break up the visuals in this incredibly visually boring story, but that wasn't it. It happens to often, and it's basically a way of saying "look at this dialog, it's super salient." Go fuck yourself.

So this is gonna be kinda shallow since I'd actually have to make one for Akane too to fully flesh out Hanabi but ehh whatever.

Okay so let's start with a very basic premise.
Every main character is scum (except maybe Moka but even she isn't completely innocent).

But basically the driving force of Hanabi's character is that of loneliness.

To start with her relationship with sensei, it is in a way it really is Daddy issues. She says it herself she had heard that her Father left the house because of her. This feeling meant that she always felt she was the cause of her own loneliness. Onii-chan basically did become her surrogate father figure and helped her stop feeling so alone, but a part of her never stopped feeling lonely. If you go back to chapter 2 flashback of her 3 legged race she didn't get mad a Moka for accusing her of cheating it's clearly about her not having a father.
Hell at the end of the flashback Narumi basically spells out why Moka fell for him and why she and Mugi started going out (kinda) "Both have things we are jealous of each other so when one of us is lonely we can help the other"
And notice too that despite this line We never learn about Naumi's Father or Hanabi's Mother, so it seems that despite both being jealous of that type of the family the other has that isn't really important, so rather than the family part the important of the sentence is "When on of us is lonely we can help the other"

Also note how Hanabi reacts badly to the thought of losing things or being alone. Not just Onii-chan but even Mugi (she gets jealous about him even before she fell in love with him) and Ecchan (Semi-consensual Lesbian rape).

With Mugi when she first comes onto him she says "aren't you lonely"

And I'm gonna post this part first cause this is taking forever and the thread needs a bump.

Okay so her whole relationship with Mugi is built on loneliness.

It's basically comfort and sexual desire. At least that's what it started as and how they told themselves their relationship was. Later on they both realize that they love each other, but we're getting ahead.

It's actually quite clear by the series present (Chapter 1) that they actually do like each other. Hanabi shows jealousy and genuine concern about him multiple times and you can tell from monologue during sexy times that even before she literally says that she has a hard time imagining Onii-chan that she actually has a really hard time distancing herself from the act of doing it with Mugi. Hell it's pretty obvious from her end that she's actively avoiding trying to fall in love with him. She forces herself to remember Onii-chan, she won't thinking about why she chose him. She says it started as a joke when she came onto him but then couldn't stop, but it's ambiguous enough about what the joke is because she's flashing back to different parts of the relationship while saying it.

It's actually much harder to talk about her relationship with Mugi without talking about him then I thought.

Imma eat first and if I don't forget I guess I'll continue or maybe when the new ep drops since that will probably motivate me.

As an alternate spin there was a period where she didn't hate in on the physical level, and even on the emotional level but (and actual spoilers) that's merely because at the time where Hanabi was more open to the relationship it was because she had her heart broken twice once by Sensei and again by Mugi (all in the same day). So rather than caring about the sex, she cared more about being desired "yay someone actually wants me". and even then there was a lot of scuminess all around since both parties were crucifying themselves in their heads.

Hell there's actually a really nice parallel that I think most people miss Hanabi resolves to breakup with Ecchan (but also remain friends) after reading her diary and deciding that she does LOVE (platonically) Ecchan and wants to be her friend, and therefore can't use her to ignore what happened with Sensei and Mugi.

Which is kind of a parallel between her and Akane. Akane decides to break up with Mugi after she realizes she loves him enough to not want to use him as second string to Narumi.

I'll argue it's not really an ecchi type anime where the intent is to titillate, but a drama where sex is a major theme.

I share your complaints about how ecchi shows go for flashy displays of sexuality but avoid any actual sex ever happening. It is weird, but can be explained. Oddly enough her whole character is about her ONLY having confidence in how hot she is. She acts super self confident but truthfully she needs the one night stands to make herself feel good about herself, it's the only thing she has going for her in her life.

It may be my pretentious over examination of her character, but my take on it is she felt such a deep guilt over what she did to her friend back in school that her only coping mechanism was to flaunt her body and snatch men. Sort of like "I'm a piece of shit in every conceivable way, but at least I'm hot, right? Please tell me I'm hot!" She had to sleep around and steal men just to reinforce her own insecurities about every other aspect of her life. So when someone came along who saw Akane's flaws and accepted her and broke that cycle she was able to finally feel at peace with herself and feel love.
