On the one hand, that makes it so we're reading the translator's humor rather than the original humor

On the other hand, if the original humor is a kanji-based pun based on some japanese cultural icon that we baka gaijins have never heard about, I have to admit we're not exactly missing out on anything if the TL does something else.
