Yes, the latter half. From volumes 1-43, Gosho didn't use kanji play all that much. I mean, there are some cases like that, but no where near as many as in the second half of the manga. Early Gosho relied more on classic mystery set ups.

Sera is basically Hattori-style character but without anything that makes her likeable
The issue is that she brings nothing new to the table
Her character is basically "She's a detective Ran" or "She's a kung-fu Hattori girl"
Most of the time you don't give a fuck about her and all her gags are about her being flatchested.
Even as a detective, you don't have any rivalry between her and Conan.
The only interesting things about Sera are the things that she's involved in. I bet you any other members of her family could have filled her role and nothing would have changed.

They have a nice friendly rivalry where they both want to beat the other but can set it aside to work together.

Holy fucking shit, this movie is awful. There's no investigation. As soon as Conan leaves the room, a clue shows up that he misses. He barely even tries to follow along. Then at the end he just asks Kid to explain everything to him.

Movies 19 and 20 were both awful. It's not like any of the movies are stellar, but most of them at least have Conan investigating a mystery and solving it. The last two movies feature the least amount of detective work in the entire series.

She was also dating Kohji Haneda at the time and her investigation got Kohji killed. So she quit the force to avenge Kohji by herself and try to lure out Rum with her fake name. And so far we've got the FBI, CIA, and the NPA investigating the Black Org, it would make sense that the Japanese Police is doing their own investigation too.

18 is great

I liked 17, even if everyone else didn't. It was fun seeing Conan wandering around on his own, investigating things and messing with people. I loved when he was spying on the female navy officer and got her caught without her ever realizing.

15 was fun for Conan's stunt at the end, plus seeing Ran cry over him

14 is one of the best movies; nothing beats two hours of Conan fighting terrorists
