He later had the idea to also include some romance to make future developments come out more easily. So since Mai became a kid, he paired her up with Trunks (he could have chosen Goten instead, but I guess Tori thought Trunks was more fitting).

The same thing happened in the future timeline because Pilaf made that wish before the androids killed Piccolo.

Why? They weren't needed or necessary for the overall plot. They left the stage in DBZ and life went on just fine for the characters. This is how I see it. Toriyama is known for making characters just to throw them away but the Pilof gang somehow came back from the dead for no apparent reason and he just stuck her with Trunks because it's the only way to make her relevant in any way. And he did all this because he liked the characters even though they're not "those characters" anymore. Can you really not see how next level hack writing this is?
