The author himself said Hiko didn't appear much in the story because his editor told him he was too strong. Hiko himself said he could just go and beat Shishio, but he didn't have the patience or the will to change history. Remember the motivation behind Kenshin's abandonment of his training was because he wanted to use his strength to help in the war, which Hiko was completely against. He only fought against the giant guy because Kenshin made him promise to do it. Otherwise, he would just stay at his mountain drinking sake.

I'm getting confused in this thread. It appears that people are calling Hiko, Soujirou and vice versa.

What's the problem with this? They flat out state that Soujiro disappears. Someone once did the math for how fast you'd have to be and it was about 300 km/h. Which is faster than a horse, never mind a carriage.

But I kinda see why he keeps coming back to it, not only is the world well established and really detailed due to it being a historical manga he did his research on, but it's also what the readers want. It's safe and the world is already built.
