In today's episode we saw something apparently obvious, sports and games are a replacement for war. Again Bag-chan is the soul bringing peace among the human animals who can't stop warring yadda yadda, we already knew that Bag-chan philosophically represents the purest man*.


What was less obvious was what the Lion and the Moose, and their allies represent.
The Lion-tachi are the people who are strong, and know they are strong. They represent the passive strength, or the ones who don't attack unless they are attacked. It's no coincidence that the grunts are two herbivorous animals, auruch and Oryx.
The moose and her friends on the other hand are animals often considered minor, boring, silly, or stupid. The only one who isn't like that is the Rhino, who is the most human seen so far given that she has an armour. The Rhino also chases Serval, serving both as the classic STR vs DEX fight and as the brute attacking the Virgil figure.

What do we get from this? this episode was an attack to the usual underdog shounen heroes fighting against the strongest power.

Your shounen-tier rebels are shown as violent idiots (notice also how they turned Bag-chan gift of a game into war again, like man has always done with the gift of gods) while the order, which is not by human law but by natural law, is presented as the good guys.


They key point thought is that this is not a reactionary might makes right, or an anarcho-primitivist return to the rule of jungle, here Lion has the power through the philosophical interpretation of astronomy: Lion here is not ruler of the animal world but ruler of the stars, just notice that auroch is the bull, and Oryx the capricorn. Bear is another constellation, less relevant and as such doesn't appear as much as the other 3.

Also the outfits. KF and Touhou both have lots of characters with unique outfits and looks.

I think when something looks really good artists don't want to draw it because the source material sets the standard for art really high, and people expect you to adhere to the art style more closely. With something like this or Touhou almost anybody with a little bit of skill can draw something that looks better than the source material. But a big cast or shitty art doesn't make a Kemono Friends or Touhou, its all the charming little aspects that work together to mysteriously become a hit. I don't think you could pinpoint these phenomena to any specific element.

It isn't intended for kids but it can certainly be enjoyed by all audiences.

Here is an explanation I wrote before
It's cute, it's charming, it's simple, the characters are lovable and the poor 3D animation is endearing. It is easy to enjoy and watch without thinking but there is also a post apocalyptic mystery beneath the surface. The simple narrative of everyone working together and using their strengths to achieve something and the way everyone are different friends with their own strengths is heartwarming. It has that "healing" quality to it. Come home from a long salaryman day at work, put something easy and cute on to watch that will give you a warm and fuzzy feeling and not make you think too hard. Kind of like how iyashikei genre works. Even the poor 3D works in its favour to make it feel kind of moe because there is clearly a lot of effort being made by the people working on it.

Here is the director explaining from an interview:
-The anime has a relatively calm style, however in a brief comment what would you like to express as a director in this work?

That such a park exists somewhere, with the image to go there on a trip. I am happy if the viewer has a feeling of following Serval. As the theme park is quite unique I think the viewer can enjoy the scenery and atmosphere along the way with characters. There are different areas and friends to see while various things unfold along the way. So it has the elements of a road movie too. Please watch Serval's trip

The series seems to be doing well partially due dedicated 2ch exposition and their memes, although I do believe the show could also be aimed at young children from 3 to 4 years old, the characters are pretty much harmless and overral it's simply cute.

Besides it's late local timeslot (01:34 at dawn) it should have reruns at sunday mornings, that's the japanese version of saturnday mornings; really it does deserve it's surprise hit of the season status, it's good for what it is.
