I'd argue that simultaneously, they've done the opposite to Rei. Not only have they directly attacked the mystery of Rei by forcing in answers to them, they've also deliberately chosen the answers that cater to Asuka fans - despite how these answers make no sense.

It's a time where Khara was created, and they started rewriting the characters to make Rei look pathetic and uninspiring, while doing the opposite for the two characters you are fond of, Kaworu and Asuka. Isn't that suspicious? Isn't there a small part of you even that that makes you doubt that you're being played? You know, in the original story, Asuka never understood that she was being played or misled, even when confronted about it by Shinji. It's sort of poetic that an Asuka fan would do the same.

But I digress, the elements that make Kaworu and Asuka interesting in 2007-2017 are elements that are blatantly stolen from Rei herself. That and Rei's character in the original story had a development and character background that actually worked with these mysterious and interesting elements, which makes Rei's character not just superficially interesting such as it is with Kaworu or ASuka, but it makes it genuine, solid.

So when people say Asuka or Kaworu are interesting, they really mean that they enjoy the fanservice they are getting. There isn't any meaning to them, nor is there any interest in them beyond wanting more of them.
