Modern mecha are made primarily by people who want to carry on the tradition of mecha that they enjoyed as kids rather than people who intend to market mecha as a viable product to a current demographic.

Their audience moved on and they didn't. Now mecha has become reputed by this adherence to out-of-fashion and is unfashionable itself by extension.

Mecha anime in the 70s and 80s was made to sell toys, garbage like Tom & Jerry or Scooby Doo had more depth than 95% of mecha anime in that time period, there are still gems like Patlabor, LotGH or Five Star Stories but those are the exception.

Rather than experiment with new designs and approaches to mecha, creators appealed to nostalgia. When everything has been Gundam forever, mecha gets old.

Same formula being used makes it out dated. Teenage kid having a fated encounter with a robot to fight the invaders. Pretty much the storyline on most mecha shows right now. Build fighters was the show that gave freshness back to mecha for me.

What they need to do is go back to the world of space opera and throw mechs in. Stop making the center point flashy mechs to sell toys. Make an actual story with meaning about 3 dimensional characters we care about.

mecha is odd because it's made to sell toys but it also has most of anime's best writing and characters - characters who are also some of anime's most (well, not really, but pretty) cliche. modern anime audience is too smart to fall for the toys and too dumb to appreciate the writing.
